“Country Christmas” by Ralph Avery
20th-century American watercolor, part of the Memorial Art Gallery’s collection.
Reader's Digest front and back cover, May 1964
Illustration: "Blue Iris" by Ralph Avery
Avery (1906-1976) was a watercolor artist who graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1928 and was a faculty member of the department of Applied Art for 25 years. He often painted scenes from the local area-gray, foggy views of the downtown skyline, portraits of elegant old city homes, and abstractions of natural areas from the surrounding landscape.
