Collective Inspiration
Now through May 2, 2021, the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery in the Phoenix Art Museum presents an exhibition which “pairs fashion objects with paintings, sculptures, and prints to explore how artistic principles can be applied to both fashion designs and more traditionally recognized forms of arts.” This would clearly be a project after the hearts of the Dress Doctors who drew on the western principles of composition in order to apply the art principles to clothing.
You see here two examples from the show. First, a piece of stoneware by Fujikasa Satoko called “Movement of Nature” and created in 2013. And then a Ralph Rucci jacket from spring of 2009 created from double-faced wool crepe and netting. Then a Fortuny velvet coat with gold stencils from 1934 stenciled paired with Tiffany vase from 1921.
