Painter Research - Ralph Goings

Ralph Goings was an American photorealism painter, who focused on highly reflective items usually in diners, laundromats, gas stations, and pickup trucks. Goings was born May 9th, 1928 and sadly died September 4th 2016. Ralph Goings was heavily influenced by the Photorealism movements between the 1960s and 1970s. He faced criticism from sceptics who believed photorealism was a form of 'cheating' true art. Ralph defended his practice and continued creating his work. His art represents just how real it can be, and how anything can be immortalised.

Using the natural and artificial light to exaggerate the colour. Goings uses oil on canvas for his pieces, typically working in large scale. Within his art there is usually start contrast between shiny and matte items, as well as contrast between the colours, warm and cold. Goings take pictures of natural compositions he finds in restaurants, he avoids creating the composition and prefers to make observational art of what he can find. Ralph takes high quality photos, choosing his favourite he then projects the photo onto the large canvas, sketching down the details and then developing the colours and tone using oil paints.
