Ramaria stricta, a coral fungus of the family Gomphaceae. Found fruiting below a fallen Douglas Fir log on a moist flat above Albee Creek.

I love coral fungus. They make me feel like the forest floor is suddenly a salt water aquarium and I just KNOW there are clown fish within the delicate growth. Other than the tiny fantastical stories I tell myself about their inhabitants I don’t know much about them. I’ve photographed dozens and dozens of these guys over the years.  Anyone know any fun coral fungus facts? 

I took this pic in Oct 2019 at a foray in Wisconsin. Likely Ramaria stricta.

Ramaria stricta,

Fruiting along an old moss covered nursery log in filtered light; often confused with R. bicolour this species becomes more distinctive with age. This species also has a very distinct smell.
