The LAGONDA Rapier was designed by Tim Ashcroft in 1933 with it's jewel of a engine, the cars was sold without a body which were mainly supplied to the customers requirements by Abbot although other makers also built bodies for them. After a year of production the Lagonda company hit financial difficulties then liquidation and a takeover bid fronted by A. Good with backing from W .O. Bentley stepped in. They decided to concentrate on building the larger trade mark Lagonda and dispense with the Rapier after a production of 470 cars. Lagonda accepted a bid from Tim Ashcroft, William Oates and Tim Brockelbank to produce the Rapier under the name of Rapier cars based in based in Hammersmith the cars continued to be produced until 1938 with sporadic production 1940. Always expensive the car sold for £ 415 Rapier cars production 300 cars RANALAH Ranalah Coachworks Ltd was born out of John Charles Ltd, when the latter failed in 1935. The newly formed company operated out of Merton, South-West London and the name was a carry over from John Charles days when most of the coachwork offerings carried the John Charles name. At least 41 of the 46 Rapier chassis supplied between 1935 and 1938 received Ranalah bodywork. Ranalah produced a four seat tourer (22 produced) and a drop head coupe (15 produced), together with three 4-light saloons and one 2-seat roadster. The Foursome Drop Head Coupe was advertised as - An ideal ALL-WEATHER Sports car of pleasing appearance, providing comfortable accommodation for four persons. The construction of the head enables the front half to be rolled back, while the Tonneau remains covered. When fully folded down the appearance of the car is exceptionally pleasing, due to the head resting in a well at the rear of the body. A centre arm rest is fitted in the rear seat. Equipment includes: concealed spare wheel with cover at the rear, and combined fog and spot lamp (not evident on this car), dual wind screen wipers. The car sold at £ 410 ex works.
