The Rev. Islay Walden, founding pastor of Strieby Congregational Church, in Randolph County, NC, died on 2 February 1884. A notice appeared in the Asheboro Courier, and was picked up by the Alamance Gleaner and published on the 21 February. When reading the introductory “Sketch of His Life” in his volume, WALDEN’S SACRED POEMS, it was stated that while journeying to Washington DC, ostensibly in the wintertime, Islay Walden had become ill and was hospitalized in Richmond , Virginia. Figuring that in 1867, he was most likely hospitalized in a Freedmen’s Hospital, I searched Freedmen’s Hospital records in the Richmond area for evidence of his hospitalization. I found nothing. However, just a few weeks ago, in a random search on FamilySearch, I found the attached records. Islay indeed had been hospitalized for several weeks as the Sketch had asserted, but not in Richmond. He was in a different “R” city—Raleigh, NC. He was in the Freedmen’s Hospital located on the original (1st of 3 sites) site of the Agricultural Fair. He was hospitalized in August of 1867, and discharged in early October. It was just a couple weeks later on 17 October, that he would marry Amelia Frances “Fannie” Harriss. The marriage didn’t last. By the time he reaches Washington, DC in early 1868, he’s alone. My guess is (more research) he met Fannie while in hospital and she helped nurse him back to health. Confusing gratitude for love as humans are wont to do, he married her upon his release. It couldn’t have gone well at all since he never referenced her in his writings. Fannie eventually married John Chavis in Raleigh in 1871. On Friday, 2 April 1870, the 15th Amendment was ratified. Islay Walden was in Washington DC. He and hundreds of others would gather the next night to celebrate.
