OH MY GOD

Ok so like with all families that aren't white there's the whole joke/blatant reality about being 'randomly checked' at the airport. Now I was thinking 'hey, I look white and Noah's a kid it'll be breezy'. Instead what happened was a white haired white woman calls us over. Now I, thinking logically she would ask to check me, because I actually look my age today, but no! She wants to check the 'nice man' (my 12 year old very obviously not white brother) and she's all smiley and says this is just to check for any explosive material all whithout flinching from her condescending smile. I genuinely thought she was joking, like this is just some kind of racist joke, so I ask her such and she looks me dead in the eye with her now infuriating smile and says 'no this isn't a joke'. The entire time I'm sharing looks with a woman sitting down shaking her head because she knows exactly what's going on. We were two hours early so I was VERY tempted to make a scene because this is fucking ridiculous! They're not even subtle with their racism!! This world makes me sick. This is going to be the reality for my baby brother FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE, this is already something that happens to my mother and every single one of my siblings. This is the world we live in? And my poor brother doesn't yet understand why this infuriates me so, but someday he will when he catches a plane for the hundredth time and every time gets 'randomly checked'. I am so fucking privileged to have a light skin tone but I will never be ignorant to this injustice because these are my people and just because I rarely experience first hand does not mean that I'll ignore it.

So my dad was saying that one time in the 90s, he had a meeting in London and he was in Vienna on transit. He said, “Yes. Born and raised.”

“You don’t look Malaysian,” they replied. “And your name doesn’t sound Malaysian.”

My dad sat forward and asked them, “Have you been to Malaysia?” They shook their heads. “Do you even know where Malaysia is?”

“We do. It’s between Thailand and Singapore. We know how Thais look like and we know how Singaporeans look like.”

“And do you know how Malaysians look like?” They shook their heads again. “Let me see that suspicious thing in my luggage.”
