Fictional Woman Who Shaped Me

Tagged by @allatariel​ (thanks for thinking of me!), and no, for once, I did not write a dozen drabbles for them all. I decided that sometimes it’s better to just answer the question honestly, instead of hiding behind fandom and headcanons and so forth.

And I couldn’t figure out how to do it, for this one.

Rules: List ten of your favorite female characters in ten different fandoms and then tag ten people.

1. Jyn Erso - Rogue One (What a shock. What a surprise. Who could have guessed. Competent, tough, intelligent, quiet, kind. I could go on for a long time, here, but I will point to the 425,456 words of fanfic that I have posted on AO3 within the last 9 months, all of which relate to or are inspired by Jyn Erso, and let that speak for itself.)

2. Eowyn - Lord of the Rings (strength in despair, hope in darkness, refusal to lie down and take men’s shit, even if they are men that she loves. A formative influence on my childhood.)

3. Molly Grue - The Last Unicorn (the first female character I ever saw be grumpy and disappointed with her life and not shamed for it, allowed to be unfriendly but still a good person, allowed to be something other than unfailingly sweet and attractive while still being loved)

4. Kate Daniels - the Kate Daniels series (an unapologetic fighter and powerhouse who nonetheless takes responsibility for her actions. The world knocks her down, over and over, and she gets back up and tries again, every time. And looks badass while doing it.)

5. Hermione Granger - Harry Potter series (Smart, dedicated, awkward, bad at empathy and social situations but loyal and fierce as a honey badger. Basically, I think Hermione was the embodiment of the perfect student for every house, and the Sorting Hat finally just threw her in Gryffindor to see what kind of chaos it would cause, because it’s a bit of a shit and being an immortal hat is boring.)

6. Leia Organa - Star Wars OT (counting it as separate from Rogue One. Another formative influence, a woman who was nobody’s damsel in distress, and led the rebellion with unfailing determination. Also pretty snappy with her comebacks, and handy with a chain.)

7. Deryn (Dylan) Sharp - Leviathan series (A cross-dressing, somewhat genderfluid youth during an alternate version of WW1, who runs away from home and dons the clothes and persona of ‘Dylan’ just to get a chance to FLY. Clever, skilled, and never ashamed - but also learns patience and trust with a partner/future love interest/best friend, and does what must be done to save the world...and keep it safe.)

8. Petra Arkanian - Ender’s Game (one of the only girls in Battle School, the only one by the end, constantly shoved back and disrespected and yet never, ever willing to give up. Fierce, talented, blazingly smart, and yet still willing to help those around her, despite the competitive nature of the school and the fact that she had every single reason to be defensive and mistrustful (she is a little of those, too, but she overcomes it, for the cause and for her friends). Yes, she was clearly written by a man, and her later character development gets railroaded into something awful by Orsen Scott Card’s descent into increasingly unreadable intolerance and misogyny. Still, in Ender’s Game, she’s pretty hardcore.)

9.  Aerin Dragon-Killer - The Hero and The Crown (Just...look at her name. A massive formative influence in my childhood.)

10. Sheherazade - 1001 Arabian Nights (One of the best storytellers in the world. That’s all I’ve got to say about that.)
