I watched Wuthering Heights and while I understand people being upset because it's not a "faithful" adaptation (something i'd argue against actually, because it's just more character focused than plot focused, but it does touch the pivotal points of the story. anyway) I don't understand people being so bitchy about it. From the very beginning Emerald Fennell said this was a different take on the story, that it was like a fever dream (check✔️) and there are like 30 movies based on the book, why would you want yet another one that repeats the exact same thing again? (like the 2011 fiasco)
The film is shot beautifully and they made the most of the liberties they took aesthetically-wise, the costumes are great (i'm a fashion designer. I have an informed opinion), the acting is fine (just fine imo, not mindblowing), it's horny, it's kinky, it's disgusting and it punches you in the fucking gut when it should
i'm not saying you shouldn't be critical about it (i am, i have things to say about some of the acting, the soundtrack and the ending in particular) but i think the negative reaction it's getting online is disproportionate. And honestly I don't think people would be raging about it like this if it wasnt directed by a woman (or by Emerald more specifically lol), but what do we know of rampant misogyny disguised as being critical, right?
The complaints about the romantization or wtv of Isabella's role.... i don't know if it's being romanticized? Sexualized? Definitely. But everyone knows Heathcliff is being an absolute fucking monster to her, he says so himself! she knows it! everyone sees it! no one denies it! Which!! Even if they were denying it, i'll have you know, this is gothic story telling!!!!!! ("Media literacy is dead and the new WH is proof of it" are you listening to yourself???😭😭) Even at the points where you can see her being "into it" it feels like she's been brainwashed, there's no mistaking it as anything else imo
Anyway. Maybe it's thanks to Interview with the Vampire (2022) that i'm less inclined to be such a purist about book to screen adaptations, especially when they're done well, especially when they're classics that are almost 200 years old. I just find it funny that the same people who praise things like Wicked (essentially a fanfic!!!!) feel so utterly enraged about this movie
Finally and for the record, Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite books. I read it for the first time when i was barely a teenager, i've reread it probably like 8 times since then, so it is a story I hold close to my heart. My best friends felt the same and I heard a lot of people coming out of my screening saying they liked it (a local movie critic happened to be in my screening and he gifted us beautiful handmade bookmarkers he made himself), so, idk. I think i've accepted this movie/director are the ones people online have chosen to be their punching bag and that's fine by me as long as you let other people enjoy it, keep all your hate it in the appropiate tags and use your brains<3 i'll be happy over here and rewatching in a few days :)
