Heart Blindness

“…having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;” - Ephesians 4:18

Amidst his slight obsession with sexual purity and curbing lustful instincts, Paul dropped some gems of deeper quality in his letters to the nascent churches of early Christianity. In another call to not get caught up in the groupthink of the Gentiles, Paul lays out these words of wisdom. I’ve never really connected it much to the lustful behavior he admonishes in the adjoining verses. By the time this passage held resonance for me because of the references to a darkened life caused by heart blindness. Some translations call the heart “hardened” and speak to “wandering away” from a life The Creator intends. That always spoke to me. How many times did I find myself in unfortunate situations because I was blindly chasing my desires?

It’s only been made more relevant as I venture into adulthood. There are my own past decisions that put it in perspective. And those of my friends and family just drive the point more. For some it’s a job or a title. For others, it’s a position. And for many, it’s a person. Despite all evidence that the object of desire might not be best for the individual. A job for which their skills would be underutilized. A title for which they are ill equipped. A person who’s superficially attractive but whose personality would result in a cacophony of errors. 

And dissuasion finds it hard to gain a foothold. Logic cast recklessly aside. Even as events and obstacles naturally present themselves to hint that even fate is trying to guide one away from a bad decision. A coterie of trusted friends who unanimously advise against the actions to achieve the desire. Continued rejections from would be employers and from the lips of the paramours themselves. Nothing catches. Instead, we drive towards our fixations with unparalleled passion. All those naysayers to be proven wrong once they see your triumph. Those obstacles just fodder for future stories to prove your strength and perseverance. 

They often end up as signals you foolishly overlooked once you put on your hindsight spectacles. A side effect of heart blindness is blood not getting to the eyes of your soul. Those clear landmarks to change course are obscured in a blind spot that continually grows. It’s usually heartbreak that eventually gets a person to seek treatment. The hope is that the damage isn’t too entrenched and lessons can be learned more quickly. But there are those who throw years away, toiling at work to keep bumping against a glass ceiling, fighting to conjure a love from a person resigned to be a stone. And once in a while, the damage is so deep that one can never recover. Most do though. And we pray we are never that blind again.
