Kh Fighter: Base Controls

I will state all my controls assuming a playstation controller, because that's what most of the games were designed around, and it makes notation easier.

Buttons:

X - select/attack

This is the most important button! This is how every character attacks, and most characters use it for basically everything. For example, kh1 Sora (or sora1/S1) uses it to attack, cast magic, use items, or summon summons, but dream drop Sora (or DDD/DDS) only uses it to attack (iirc).

Circle - Jump

Unless I am forgetting something important, this is EVERY character's jump button, and can be used to exit submenus. Pretty simple. For characters with high jumps, tapping the button will do a short jump, holding it will do a high jump. For characters with double jumps, tapping jump in midair will make them double jump. For (most) characters with a glide, this is the button used to glide, accessed by holding down the button. I won't go through every button, as for some glide is on square, and for some it's on triangle, so bear that in mind. For characters with flight, this makes them ascend.

Square - guard/dodge

For most characters, this is the button they use to access guard and dodge. Press it in neutral and they'll guard, press it and a direction and they'll dodge. For some characters, pressing it in the middle of an attack/combo will do something unique, like for kh2 Sora (or sora2/s2). That's also his glide button which is really funny. Some characters also have unique movement options like air dashes or flowmotion, and most of the time they'll be bound to this.

Triangle - special

This is the most unique button, as it has different functionality in almost every game! For sora1, it is used to call assists or use limits. For sora2, it's used for reaction commands. For riku (specifically his chain of memories incarnation), it's used to load cards into sleights. For Roxas it can be used to augment combos or glide. For Aqua it uses commands. It truly depends on the character.

Left shoulder/L1 - shortcut

This is near universally the button to access the shortcut menu. Some exceptions exist, but not many. Before the match starts you can assign each button to spells or items or whatever. But be careful, once the match begins, there's no changing them!

Right shoulder/R1 - lock on

This is also near universal, and it's for the lock on system. Some mechanics change when locked on or not, and your character won't automatically face your opponent when performing actions while not locked on, so be sure to know when and where to use it! An example is that sora1 is able to use limits while locked on, but ISN'T able to command Donald and goofy (called assists) while a limit is selectable. Use it wisely!

Triggers/L2/R2 & dpad - menu navigation

Near universally, the triggers are used for command menu/deck navigation, so you don't have to use the dpad for everything, but there are some nuances. For example, sora1 can use the triggers to navigate the menu up and down, but can navigate into and out of submenus using only the dpad or face buttons. Kh3 Sora can only use the right trigger to navigate the menu, because left trigger shuffles through his reaction commands.
