dear ranger's apprentice fandom. so i've been seeing a lot of hate on wilt (for those of you who don't know that's will x halt.) and it's been bothering me a bit. now, i’m not here to try and vouch for the political and moral compass of this ship but there is something important i feel the need to say.
no. matter. what. you. ship. you. are. still. a. valid. fan.
romance has never been the most important part of the series. the best part of it has always been the unlikely friendships. as the fandom we should reflect that and accept others we disagree with and make our own unlikely friendships maybe you happen to be thinking to yourself: "well you're a morally grey multishipper nothing matters to you anyway." (all odds say you probably aren't but let's pretend.) i would have to say to you that there are ships i don't agree with. personally lydia x ingvar is a huge pet peeve for me, along with cassie x horace. but i don't estrange those who ship them and make them feel like walking pieces of garbage. people are people no matter what they think and people are deserving of respect this needs to be said before the fandom turns toxic and starts judging based on the characters you ship. don't like wilt? that's fine. but instead of ostracizing those who do, embrace the things about them you do agree with, there is no need to act like shipping is the only facet of ranger's apprentice. we should all do our best to make sure that everyone can express themselves and be free of the fear that they will be alienated
(Warning i have an opinion and this next part is just my preference) Honestly age differences don't really bother me in fiction because i could just make an au where they are the same age and the dynamic wouldn't change but that's just my take.
Will: “I had NOTHING to do with it!”
Will, five minutes later: “Okay it was my idea but I don’t feel good about it.”

Live Facebook chat with John Flanagan
Past Friday 1 December at 6AM CETZ there was a live Facebook chat with John Flanagan and of course I had to take part. Here are the best/funniest questions with their answers! (I’m Rose)
>>>---------->
Rose: "Hi Mr. Flanagan, good afternoon! First of all, thank you so much for this! Fans have been burning to ask some questions and since some of them can't ask them here themselves due to lack of Facebook or because of time zones, I have woken up before 6AM (I live in the Netherlands) to ask the questions for them :). The first and probably most burning question is: Is there any chance we'll see Alyss back? Maybe in some sort of flashback (like Erak's Ransom) or in a Brotherband book?"
JF: "If I ever do another book of short stories, you never know! JF"
>>>---------->
Rose: "Some other questions I was requested to ask...: 1) Is there a release date for more books? 2) Which book is your favourite? 3) Do Gilan and Jenny ever get married? 4) Might we get a book on Halt's training under Pritchard? Thanks so much from everyone who wasn't able to participate in this live stream!!!"
JF: "1. Mid next year! 2. All of them. 3. I do hope they will, she's a very strong willed woman, that Jenny. And who'd do the catering? 4. I don't think so, I think we've got enough training now. JF"
Rose: "Oh that's SO exciting! And I'm betting Master Chubb will be allowed to do the catering - if he sticks to Jenny's recipes, anyways. Under no circumstances he would be allowed to use any more herbs than she wants, after all, less is more. And if she didn't stay in the kitchen to keep an eye on everything until she was practically dragged out of it... Love the couple anyway! Gilan and Jenny were quite a surprise and yet perfect all the same!"
JF: "Good answer. Do you think Jenny is going to walk down the aisle with a ladle in her hand ready to clock Gilan if he displeases her? JF"
Rose: "Hmm tough one. I'd say yes, because Jenny without a ladle is like a Ranger without his cloak, however, on the other hand, I also do think this could be one rare moment where she doesn't have it... in sight. Maybe hidden? Regardless of whether she does or doesn't, however, we all know that Gilan would never ever do anything that displeases Jenny."
Jessamine Remminga: "Maybe she'll have the ladle hok on her arm like old fashioned brides had that little sachet thingy?"
Rose: "In her hair XD"
JF: "Jenny will abide by the old rule: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue... and a ladle."
>>>---------->
Julia Robinson: "Hi, Gilan is my favourite character and I was wondering if you had any plans of writing a prequel about his training as a Ranger?"
JF: "I think I'm almost done with training - though there will be more with Maddie coming up. Gilan does feature heavily in the next Royal Ranger book, so watch this space. JF"
Rose: "Oh my I'm so ready for Gilan as a major character can't wait"
>>>---------->
Megan Sotelo: "How about fun little everyday facts about Halt you have in thought that you don't really bring up in the series? Like habits, secrets or something."
JF: "He picks his feet with his arrowheads. JF"
(After many comments shared between Megan and me, and even JF, she has agreed to draw this and of course share it with us!)
>>>---------->
Josiah Paradis: "Ruins of Gorlan and Burning Bridge had more fantasy elements, especially with the Wargals and Kalkara. What made you decide to depart from mythical creatures and other fantasy elements in future books?" (If I can just interfere for a moment, I feel like myths have always been an important factor throughout the entire series)
JF: "Initially I thought I needed non-human creatures as enemies because I had a young protagonist. As we went on I decided we could become more realistic. A lot of people were writing mythical creatures and magic and I wanted a point of difference. JF"
>>>---------->
Tauriel Elizabeth Mae: "Any plans for another Early Years book for RA?"
JF: "I don't think I'll be doing any more Early Years -- it's too hard to slide in around the facts that I've already written. The second Early Years book was very difficult for this reason. JF"
>>>---------->
Jasneet Singh: "I just wanted to know how to pronounce Abelard's name, me and my friend always bicker about it."
JF: "I usually pronounce it Abelard :) JF"
>>>---------->
Tarod Greyblood: "Is there any part of the world that you have created that you would like to write more about?"
JF: "I'd probably like to write more about Nihon-Ja. JF"
>>>---------->
Josiah Paradis: "By the time I got to book 10, I hadn't thought of George for awhile, but was pleased to see him return. What were your reasons for bringing him back for a short while in 10?"
JF: "I needed him. I'd always said George was the most boring person in the world, but I needed someone who was good at languages and that was George! JF".
>>>---------->
Lubos Prchal: "I want to ask, if there will be Wargals, or Kalkara, or some other creatures in the next books?"
JF: "No, the next book is set long after both Kalkara were killed, and as we all know, the Wargals all became peaceful and moved into the mountains and turned into vegans after Morgarath died. JF"
>>>---------->
Miki Osborne: "Have you ever considered doing a series on the couriers? My husband constantly races about how cool it would bee to see a series follow Alyss."
JF: "I haven't considered a series on the couriers -- I have enough with the Rangers and the Brotherband, and it would bring up too many sad memories. JF"
>>>---------->
Taylee Colebank: "Will Will get a happy ending??"
JF: "I certainly hope so, he deserves one, doesn't he! JF"
Rose: "If there's one person who deserves a happing ending it's Will - and if he doesn't get one I'll personally spend the rest of my life fighting for it."
>>>---------->
Marysia Szczepaniak: "Have you ever thought about writing a next adventure of Will and Horace?"
JF: "Not as such, but that's not to say it won't happen in upcoming books -- after all, Horace's daughter is now Will's apprentice. JF"
>>>---------->
Jeff Cook: "I've always wondered why Will and Alyss didn't have children?"
JF: "I've wondered that myself, actually. I think they planned to, but events got in the way. JF"
>>>---------->
Tama Valentine Cooper: "My daughter would like to know if more of the Ranger's Apprentice characters will meet the Brotherband in future books."
JF: "Gilan is features in several Brotherband books, but I don't think Hal and Will or Halt and Thorn will ever meet. I can't have too many heroes in one book! JF" (just spread it out over more books, we won't complain... but I get it haha)
>>>---------->
Miki Osborne: "Also can Ingvar and Lydia please a couple?"
JF: "Well they could be, but I've noticed she's been looking little bit at Edvin lately..."
>>>---------->
Andrew Brown: "Just curious, is Thorn based on anyone in particular?"
JF: "No, he's original! I really like him. JF"
>>>---------->
Kelsey Kenneally: "Why did you kill off Stig's love interest in Brotherband book 6? I think you're going to get yourself a reputation as a love-interest-killer."
JF: "I was really sad to do it, I think I've given poor Stig a lot of tragedy in his life, but I think he's holding up, and it's good that he has the support of his Brotherband. JF"
>>>---------->
Sam Willis Fischbeck: "In the recent book I love the nod to the Byzantines and the Ottomans. With that in mind, do you have any other places/civilisations that the band might visit or meet?"
JF: "I'm thinking of taking them into my version of Russia, to meet the Temujai. JF"
>>>---------->
Some more fun facts.... John likes pineapple on a pizza (with pepperoni, not ham) and although he doesn't put coffee in his coffee he does put too much sugar in it! He will also try to visit Melbourne more often, as he and his wife recently bought an apartment there!
Will: “We’re doing the double knife defence again right?”
Gilan: *yawns*
Gilan: “Yeah, today we’re gonna learn-“ *yawns*
Gilan: “You know what? Screw it. Go play with your bow, finger paint, I don’t care. I’m going to bed.”
