MARCH FOR RAPH ↳ Day 9: What's Wrong With Me
The portrayal of Raph & Mikey's relationship in ep. 1 of 2k3 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is unparalleled
TMNTober Day 26 - Accident
not what he intended, but man is this gonna be fun.
Guess who caught COVID after managing to dodge it for three years? It's me! Ironically I probably got it at a comic book convention getting my TMNT comics autographed by Eastman, Lavigne, Lawson, Bishop and the rest of the turtle team that showed up.
So I have a request for all you Shell Heads. Please send me any non-Tcest 2k3 fics you've got to keep entertained while I quarantine and beat this mother effing virus. Thank you so much everyone!
I know you are busy but I am curious what is your opinion on 03 Raph?
hskdjsls anon this is such a loaded question??
i mean i absolutely adore 2k3 raph. absolutely iconic shitty little short violent mutant who loves motorcycles and has a heart of gold. and as far as i’m concerned, the True™ raph, b/c he’s basically pulled straight from the original comic.
2k3 raph has depth. he’s mischievous. he’s loving. he has internal conflicts. he has motivations. he has meaningful relationships. he has mechanical knowledge. he can think outside the box. he has character growth.
beats any other raph by leaps and bounds, b/c subsequent creators apparently can’t so much as comprehend any combination of character traits with “angry” other than “bigger and dumb”. and more often than not can’t manage to differentiate between “angry” and “cruel”.
(like… i really don’t understand why raph’s character has become so watered down, but it’s truly sad to me. 2k12, ROTTMNT, MM, 2k14/16? cookie cutter generic “big mean dumb guy” garbage. 2k7 has a pretty good raph only b/c it was essentially completely reworked by peter laird. the IDW comic has a good raph, b/c the first 100 or so issues were written/directed by kevin eastman. it’s not hard to make a complex angry character, but it seems only the original creators have the passion to fight for it which is heartbreaking.)
...a storyline which has one of the Turtles losing his memory (which is a pretty significant thing) might better serve as the basis for a several episode arc where the amnesia actually adds to the drama. For example (and I must say I hesitate to suggest this, because I generally don't like these kinds of stories, but if done well, it might be cool): Raph loses his memory somehow and wanders off. The other Turtles search for him. Meanwhile, the amnesiac Raph is being recruited by the Shredder, who is twisting Raph's vulnerable mind to believe that the other Turtles are his enemies... leading to a dramatic conflict between Raph and the others, before Raph regains his memory.
— TMNT co-creator Peter Laird's 2k3 cartoon development notes [Blast from the Past #586: Episode 08 premise ("Cold Blooded") and designs]
The fact that we were robbed of this in the 2k3 cartoon is a travesty
(I also feel so vindicated by the fact that his comment perfectly outlines what rubbed me so wrong about Raph's infinitesimally short stint with the brain worm in the 2k12 run)
Rewatching 2k3 for the upteenth time because I'm in quarantine. I love how they handle Tyler in Lone Raph and Cub. The dialogue and attitude is perfectly on point for a scared and lonely 10 year old. How he and Raph learn to work together is great.
