Causes of Bad Breath
Raphael Arwas, DDS, operates a dentistry practice in Hallandale, Florida. There, Dr. Raphael Arwas treats a wide range of oral health problems, such as bad breath. An embarrassing problem for many individuals, bad breath can often result from certain oral health issues. If a person struggles with bad breath, he or she can try number of approaches to try to deal with the problem. For instance, an individual should make sure that they are brushing and flossing thoroughly every day, as small pieces of food stuck between the teeth can sometime contribute to bad breath. If a person has dentures, he or she should be sure to clean them well. However, flossing and brushing can’t get rid of bad breath that results from eating strong-smelling foods, such as those containing garlic. When the body breaks down these foods, the strong smells associated with them become present in the breath. Mouthwash and oral hygiene can help cover the scent of the breath, but the smell will remain until the foods have been processed by the body. Therefore, if bad breath is a problem, an individual should avoid these types of foods. In some cases, bad breath may indicate a more serious health issue, such as a respiratory tract infection, acid reflux, a liver condition, or other problems. If a person’s bad breath is persistent or particularly strong, he or she should consult with a dental professional.
