Rhonda Rosen and the asexual spectrum (along with technically the aromatic one as well)
During my first viewing of School Spirits one of my first thoughts on Rhonda Rosen's character is that she’s asexual, or rather on the spectrum, as there is a lot of nuance when it comes to her character, but I want to dissect this topic.
The first thing that tipped me off to Rhonda being on the asexual spectrum was her talk with Maddie in the costume room when they are getting ready for homecoming. Maddie asks if the ghosts can have sex, and Rhonda of course answers by saying “I said we can swell”, which of course leads to her teasing Maddie about being a virgin. Now yes, I do know that Rhoda said that they are all going through puberty, and alluded to having sexual relations.
From what we know from each of the characters, Charley is gay, Wally is most likely straight, same with Janet and Dawn, and I mean yuri is there but he’d had been thought to be looping the whole time, and Rhonda is queer, now we don’t know what type of queer she is or if Rhonda has a thing for men, (which I really doubt, as I do see her as a lesbian), as we have only seen her with Quinn, so by process of elimination, Rhonda probably didn’t have any relations past platonic with any of the other ghosts, which yes can be seen as just being queer, but it can also go to say that she is on the asexual spectrum.
The biggest piece of evidence for Rhonda being asexual is in season two episode seven when she walks in on Maddie and Wally. I will say her reaction does seem like a normal reaction that one would have to seeing their friends like that, but Rhonda sounded rather disgusted at what was going on. She became awkward when telling them if I’m not mistaken to meet in the library, to discuss the new information that Quinn had gotten from their scar.
Rather than turn around and then say what she had to say, she looked at the ground, and then backed away, probably not knowing what to actually do in situations like these because she’s never been in one nor has she walked in one. Walking away she also sounds grossed out, her tone of voice changed and everything. I would say if she had walked in on Yuri and Charley instead I think she would have done the same thing.
The last major piece in this is hers and Quinn’s relationship. Rhonda had never shown interest in another character before Quinn. We do later learn that she may have had a thing for Joyce but we had only been shown her and Quinn’s. Rhonda from the start isn’t as brash towards Quinn, especially after their heart to heart on the bleachers, even if Rhonda did implement the tuba rule, which I do think was her trying to push away her feelings.
Unlike the relationships between Maddie and Wally and Charley and Yuri the two are somewhat unexpected, the other two relationships are seen off the bat, with Wally and his awkwardness around Maddie and Charley talking to Yuri like he was awe struck, with Quinn and Rhonda it’s different, they start off as friends and then slowly have small moments together, that before their kiss could be considered platonic by some people.
The first time Quinn tries to kiss Rhonda, she dodges it. She looks awkward but she still ends up walking down the hall with a high Quinn clinging to her for support. Rhonda thinks that Quinn trying to kiss her is a joke, but after another heart to heart the two kiss, and Quinn even tells her that they can wait to do anything (kiss) but Rhonda says “wait another 62 years? No way.” Which proves the point made earlier that she wasn’t involved with anyone beforehand like the show made it seem she had in season one when she is with Maddie picking out clothes.
Even though she kissed Quinn there was still such a build up to the point of Rhonda just simply being able to trust someone, because even if she trusted the others they weren’t her person. They also haven’t been shown doing anything past kissing, even then it was sweet, nothing like what we have seen from other couples on the show, with being sexually charged most times. I will also say that their relationship also makes me think that Rhonda is on the aromatic spectrum as well.
That’s all the information I have collected as of now, hoping when season four comes out there will be more allusions to her being on the ace spectrum because that would be an amazing story line for her, at least in my opinion.
Laura Lee had gotten together with Charlotte and Natalie in grade ten. They were inseparable since well, as long as they could even remember. Natalie and Laura Lee knew each other from church, and Laura Lee knew Lottie from her parents' holiday parties that the whole neighborhood would come too.
This year Laura Lee wanted to go big or go home with their big date before Christmas, where they wouldn’t see each other for a few weeks, Lottie would be forced through being with her parents and going around the world, Natalie would be cooped up at work, and Laura Lee would be at home or altar serving at the church.
Laura Lee had woken up at 3 am to get started on the day, eating her breakfast and getting into her oldest clothes as she started to whip up her very, very famous sugar cookies.
Technically she didn’t need to be ready till 1 but she wanted to be out of the kitchen by 6 and have the cookies hidden away in her room so her little brothers wouldn’t try and steal them from her.
That’s how she spends her morning, baking up a storm and then shoving them into tins and racing to her room where she proceeds to get into her most fancy wear, a white one sleeve shirt under a black floral shirt and a long black skirt.
Two hours later, a black car pulled into her driveway and a call came from Natalie telling her they had arrived. Nat was in the back seat when Laura Lee and her tin of cookies made it down to the car. As much as Laura Lee loved Lottie she didn’t want to sit in the front so she got into the back. “So plan is we are going to build a bear,” Laura Lee said, putting her tins on the ground and buckling up.
“I’m down, but I don’t have money for anything else,” Natalie said, as she reached for one of the tins. “Can I?” She looked to Laura Lee, an eyebrow raised, to which she got a nod.
Soon enough, Lottie had pulled into the parking lot of the mall. It was an old thing, and not many stores were left open, but one that hadn’t closed in years was build a bear.
The three walked into the mall, Laura Lee stood in the middle of the trio as they looked at all the windows of stores which were still open, before they came face to face with the build a bear.
Lottie walked in first, followed by Nat and then Laura Lee. “We should all get the same bear,” she said, walking up behind the two who were looking through all the unstuffed bears.
They all agreed on a cute brown bear and while the other two weren’t looking Laura Lee got two special voice boxes done both saying ‘I love you a bunch!’ She snuck back and passed the two hearts to the lady at the chair and smiled, the lady nodded her head, a sly smile on her face.
The three helped each other pick out clothes, and names for the bears before Lottie paid for the three of them and they left.
“There’s a secret in both of your bears,” Laura Lee's voice came from the back seat, once they had all managed to safely get to the car after being sidetracked into buying drinks.
Natalie and Lottie looked at each other and listened to the small voice note, before Lottie spoke up, “You’re such a sap, Lee.”
“But you guys love me!” She protests, a small pout forming on her face, and Natalie laughs.
