John Selden, Ioannis Seldeni Mare clausum, seu, De dominio maris libri duo (Leiden: Joannem & Theodorum Maire, 1636)
Above is one of the early editions of John Selden’s Mare clausum, a famous argument for English proprietary rights over parts of the high seas. Which parts? The ones the king believed were his, particularly herring-rich fishing waters off England’s coast.
One very interesting feature of our copy (apart from the sea monster on the map!) are its owners. The book was in the possession of the Reformed Church of Rouen in 1643 (see the title page, bottom). After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, officials of Louis XIV dissolved Protestant churches, forbade worship and confiscated books, including this one. Recently, our colleague and cataloger Claire Stuckey contributed a great post to our Riesenfeld Center blog, about this collection of colonial NY statutes.
The colonial owner, David Gardiner, may well have been threatened by Captain Kidd, who buried treasure on his father’s (later his) island.
The printer of this volume, William Bradford, was also the first printer in New York, who first worked on Pearl Street, the original waterfront street on the East River in New Amsterdam. You can make out Pearl Street on this map.
We're having our first open house of the semester! Stop by anytime from 12-3pm to explore a smorgasbord of the Riesenfeld Center's recent acquisitions, intermixed with some classics from the collection.
