February 13 2017 - [⚠️: murder-suicide, brutality, intimate partner violence] by Charly Haley A #DesMoines man accused of killing his wife early Monday died in a car crash while fleeing from police, authorities said. #RasemaKeco, 51, was fatally stabbed by her husband, Ekrem Keco, 58, before 2:30 a.m. in her home in the 1900 block of 60th Street, said Sgt. Paul Parizek, Des Moines police spokesman. Ekrem Keco, who records show had a history of violently abusing his family, died later Monday morning when he crashed his car into the back of a semitrailer on Interstate Highway 80 while fleeing from police, Parizek said. Officers found he had stabbed himself in his neck prior to the crash. Rasema Keco's death is the seventh homicide in Des Moines this year. Last year at this time, there had been only one homicide in the city, and in 2015 at this time, there had been only two. It was about 2:30 a.m. Monday when the Kecos' 17-year-old son called 911 to report the stabbing, Parizek said. Police officers on scene were able to share a description of Ekrem Keco's car with area law enforcement. About 20 minutes later, Altoona police spotted the car, but Keco fled when they tried to pull him over, police said. After a short chase, Keco crashed his car into the back of the semi on I-80, near mile marker 147. Keco died at the scene of the crash, and police found he had a self-inflicted knife wound to his neck. The crash remains under investigation by Iowa State Patrol, and an autopsy is pending to determine the cause of Keco's death, police said. Keco was not living in his wife's home when he stabbed her, and there was a legal #protectionorder in place prohibiting him from having contact with his son who lived in the home, Parizek said. The couple's son was not hurt Monday morning, and he is safe with family, Parizek said. #violenceagainstwomen #domesticviolence #restinpeace Ekrem Keco appears to have a history of abusing his family. He was arrested Feb. 2 on an assault charge for attacking his son, including reportedly pushing the boy and hitting his head on the ground, court records show.
