“Her name is Mildred. She haunts me.”
her smile could end wars
Gwen/Mildred & puppets (spoilers)
We can love Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World Gwendolyn Briggs AND acknowledge that it is legitimately unnerving for this grown ass woman (who fed oysters to little bean Mildred with off-the-charts TOP energy) to suddenly be dying to go to a puppet show. You don’t have to have a puppet-theater related trauma in your past to be justifiably repulsed at the thought that your first overnight... with your new love... must be preceded by sitting in a crowd of children watching creepy marionettes.
Gwendolyn literally escalates things in response to poor Mildred’s “gee, I’d rather not do that and only that one little part of this proposed adventure” to “well, then I guess that means you clearly don’t want what I’m offering. Goodbye, forever.” Obviously, there are beats in between, but still.
(I am continually in awe of how--throughout the entire show-- Sarah and Cynthia act their little hearts out turning the writers’ unwieldy 2-4 tonal shifts per 60 seconds into plausible emotional truth.) And then Mildred steels herself to crawl across broken glass to see the puppet show, if it will make Gwendolyn happy. And honestly, if that is not the GAYEST progression of communication, then I don’t know what is. *(Side note: In the middle of this “THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY” conversation, Gwendolyn wishing she and Mildred were little girls together stabbed me right in the heart. And my ADHD brain got distracted thinking of an alternate universe fanfic of the two of them, safe and happy together as young girls going on adventures.)*

I watched Ratched. I was a bit dubious about it because, as beautifully stylistic it looked and as much as two talented queer actresses playing queer characters enticed me, the somewhat stepford-wife creepy vibe the trailer gave off gave me pause. I'm not much for horror or gore. But the gifs on tumblr, my insatiable desire for queer content and the fact it is on Netflix overcame my doubts and boy am I glad. It was so good. The show does need a trigger warning though because I wasn't wrong about the quite graphic gore. The show is well written, well paced and was ideal to inducing a couple of binge sessions (honestly why did I start this at 10pm on a school night?) to get through the 8 episodes of this season. Mildred Ratched, the titular character (Sarah Paulson), is an uncanny woman that I didn't know what to make of for the first while given she enveigles her way into a job at a mental institute to get close to her murderous brother. The question in my mind was how far would she go in pursuit of saving him? I warmed to Ratched whose blossoming relationship with Gwendolyn (Cynthia Nixon) helped to unveil her vulnerabilities. This relationship felt intrinsic to Ratched opening up and growing as a character. It makes up the core romantic story for the season and because Ratched is the main character, it makes this a very gay show for which I am grateful. Not to mention the actresses both had lovely chemistry and do a very good job of falling in love on screen. 100% recommend. #ratched #ratchednetflix #mildredandgwendolyn #lesbiantvshows #wlwtvshows #lesbian #lesbianship #lesbiancouples #wlw https://www.instagram.com/p/CGBx8FonfTN/?igshid=arheaimyzcoy
