THERE WAS TOTALLY JUST REFERENCE TO "DIE BEIDEN" (german poem) IN THIS BOOK I'M SURE OF IT.

Of course it could be weird coincidence. but seriously. One of the main characters, Boudica, "bore the beaker of welcome-ale with a grim smile" and as she hands it to a guy ON A HORSE, and "as Pollio [the horse guy] reached out for the cup his horse moved suddenly and it slipped through his fingers to smash upon the ground." Then Boudica watched "the dark liquid soak into the earth."

The story of "Die Beiden" is that a girl walks out with a cup of dark wine, and offers it to a young man on a horse, but as she hands it to him their hands don't find each other's and the wine falls on the ground.
