What in your opinion are the top three canonical relationships by how they were written/handled in the series?
Another ask that I kept waiting for far too long. In my gut, I think this is related to romantic shipping, and general health/positivity of the relationship, not like, which three are most interesting. That feels like the context in which this was sent, based on what I remember blogging about at the time. If I’m wrong, please feel free to send another ask! Sorry it took so long, and thank you for your patience. :)
1 - Marper
Monty and Harper are one of those slow-building ships that come from the best possible place - mutual care, respect, and affection. They’ve been through so much together. Monty had to watch the Mountain Men drill Harper for her bone marrow, while he was caged only a few feet away, unable to do anything but beg uselessly that they stop hurting her. Harper was there to support Monty through all the work he did to find a peaceful solution for the survival of the human race, and she was the one who made him believe that there was a better way for them. Although I imagine it was hard at times, being away from all of their friends, I’m glad they got a somewhat happy ending, and were able to care for each other and love each other until Harper’s the end.
2 - Memori
A somewhat unpopular opinion, but to me, there are few things better than seeing a couple who are at odds, but come together to protect each other in spite of that. Although I hated seeing them fight in s5, and I often wish we’d been more privy to the details of their reconciliation, I do appreciate how ride-or-die they are for each other, and how far they’ve come, given where they started. Even though it was very cinematic and dramatic to have Emori offer to die with John on the ground in 5x13, I’ve had to fill in some of my own ideas about how they patched things up. That being said, they’re probably the most beautiful couple on the show, and I love how they’re both soft and fierce for each other. Plus, we get to see them play around and have fun - a rarity for couples on this show.
3 - Ravick
Ignoring their abrupt ending* allows me to still have a soft spot for these two. I love how they start off so snarky and antagonistic, as a way to hide their burgeoning sexual chemistry. That’s a good trope. The engineer/mechanic thing was a really cute way to have them on equal but separate footing - Wick, for all his smarmy, sarcastic charm, is one of the better engineers on the ground, which complements Raven’s mechanical skills really well. They call each other out on their shit, but they’re also fun and joke around with each other. A certain lightheartedness is greatly appreciated in relationships on this show, for me. And Raven allows herself to be vulnerable with Wick at a time when she’s closed off to almost everyone else. I’ll always be a little sad that they ended with so little ceremony or fanfare.
(*obligatory “the actor was a racist asshole” footnote)
I think those are the three and most well-written romantic relationships on the show, for sure. Here’s a quick list of non-romantic relationships that I also think are healthy, just for fun, no explanation:
Raven and Sinclair
(early) Octavia, Jasper, and Monty
Bellamy and Raven
Octavia and Indra
Echo and Emori
pre-s5 Kane and Octavia
Thanks for the ask, anon!
Okay, probably an unpopular opinion here (especially since I don’t even watch The 100 anymore) but I miss Wick. He was a good character, and yeah, the actor who plays him is a real dick (apparently, I was never fully clear on that point, this is just what I’ve been told) but he was good for Raven. There, I said it. And to have him just drop off the face of the earth? Lame.
