“Shh, shh,” he heard himself say as he moved on to the ties around the statue’s knees. He could see now that’s what it was–bare stone feet peeked out beneath the edge of the sheet, joined to long lean calves with cracks spiderwebbing around the marble knees. They were perfectly still, but the top half was shifting, almost struggling now–gasping breaths wheezing faster and louder. “Shh, it’s okay,” Hongbin repeated uselessly as he picked at the stubborn knots–or maybe not so uselessly, as the breaths slowed and steadied before being interrupted by another sneeze. Hongbin could only be glad he hadn’t been wrapped in a tarp.
