RAW Seattle: An interview with Kurstin Stowe (revisited)
Q: Lets's not pretend: I adore you!!!! lol So great to work with you again! How long has it been? 2 years since Sugar Art and Fashion Does Seattle?
That is correct. It has been about 2 and a half years since we worked together. That is when I initially saw you as the fancy man!
Q: So tell me about your new salon? You spent a number of years with Helmet Head... was it time to leave the nest, fly out on your own?
It was about a year ago that I left Helmet Head. It was very bitter sweet. I like how you said that, time to fly out of the nest. That was basically exactly what I did! I am now working downtown, where I rent a studio at Sola Salons. I however, will be heading back to Georgetown in the very new feature, to join a new salon that is in the works. I am ready to be apart of a team again!
Q: What inspires you on a daily basis? Not just in your work, but as a human being on how to live, why to live?
I am inspired by everything on a daily basis. Literally, I see beauty in everything. Whether it is beautiful buildings, people, or art; it is that inspiration that makes me tick. My kitty cat is actually a huge inspiration, he is so wild yet so loving and he [Leo] reminds me to let loose and get crazy while staying grounded to the things I love.
Q: why fashion? why the beauty industry? did you always know this is where you would be one day, behind the chair?
Oh boy, why fashion? I simply am in love with fashion. I think it stemmed from my love of the images in the magazines. I didn't always know I wanted to do this, and in fact I am doing what I can do be behind the chair less and less. I much prefer the fun creative events and my current passion in my industry is education. Inspiring fellow artists to do what they do is such a fulfilling feeling.
Q: What is an exciting trend going on in the beauty industry today?
Oddly enough, I try not to pay to close attention to the trends going on in the industry. If I get too sucked in every client will go walking around with the same look and that is just no good! I do notice a lot of my clients cutting off their hair though, and strangely the 'ombre is still a thing ;]
Q: Sell me. I want to hear about the products that you endorse, and the brands that sponsor you. How did those relationships develop?
I have a raging fire that burns inside me for Evo Haircare. They are just innovative, no bs, and all around amazing products. Ever since I can remember I have been a product junky but no brand has ever stole my heart like this one. You will have to try it out for yourself to see what I mean. I started working with them about 2 years ago, went from local ambassador, to national, to international!! I teach classes for them all over North America and am currently pursuing a job with them, we will see if the beauty industry gods can help me with this one.
Q: You have done a number of high profile celebrity events. Yet you are soooo humble! What is the secret to staying down to earth in an industry that can be annoyingly superficial at times?
See, I don't look at it as doing high profile events; to me it is simply my job. I see too many stylists walking around saying oh I do this, I do that, I am the shit... I see it as I do what I do, you either like my work or not. It's all those superficial people that keep me humble.
Q: What are you reading these days? Listening to?
My current reading of choice would be this book I have called 'How the things in your home work and what to do when they don't'. This girl has to know how to take care of herself!! And my current song on repeat, as cheesy as it is, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop". That songs gets me so hyped and I just feel it. I am a total thrifter, so the song hits close to home!
Q: Do you use YouTube to promote your work as a beauty artist? Do you have a channel that others can subscribe to an learn different pointers or tips from you?
I may be one of the few in my industry that does not use YouTube as a business or marketing tool. I kind of believe that if someone wants to know how I do the things I do or wants my tips and pointers, they can just hit me up and we can go grab a bite to eat or work on a project together or simply come sit in my chair at the shop and I will teach you in person!
