Saudi 218WJ sits on the LLDPE side of that line. It’s not the toughest resin in the catalog, and it’s not meant for stackable rigid containers. But for flexible blow molding and film applications, its property set is worth a close look.
As a mainstream SABIC LLDPE grade, Saudi 218WJ is formulated to balance flexibility and tensile strength, paired with reliable puncture resistance. It addresses the most common pain points in thin-wall production: brittle finished parts, film tearing, and structural failure under minor deformation, making it a grade worth evaluating for thin-wall applications.
What 218WJ Does Differently
Unlike rigid HDPE resins designed for compression and stacking strength, 218WJ is built for ductility and deformation resistance. Its stable molecular structure delivers excellent stretching performance, allowing finished products to withstand repeated bending, folding and light stacking without cracking or fracturing. This core property makes it uniquely suited for flexible packaging scenarios where slight shape changes are inevitable during storage and transportation.
Processing Without Surprises
This grade offers a forgiving processing window for mass continuous production. The recommended melt temperature ranges from 185°C to 205°C, with a standard blow-up ratio of 2.0–3.0. It runs stably on conventional blow molding and film extrusion equipment, requiring no complex mold adjustments or parameter overhauls.
Even during long-shift nonstop operation, it maintains uniform melt output, effectively reducing thin-wall unevenness and lowering overall scrap rates. Processors can keep consistent production rhythms without frequent machine tuning, greatly simplifying daily production operations.
A Note on Batch Consistency
Batch-to-batch consistency on this grade is tight enough that processors can keep their temperature and screw speed settings locked in across shipments. The pellet quality also tends to be clean, with minimal gels or black specks — which matters greatly for thin-wall molding, where tiny surface defects are impossible to cover and can lead to full batch rejection. It also supports food-contact compliant production, meeting standard safety requirements for food and daily chemical packaging.
Where It Fits — and Where It Doesn’t
218WJ targets flexible, thin-wall production scenarios that prioritize toughness over rigidity, with clear applicable and inapplicable boundaries for production reference.
Thin-wall blow molding: Ideal for soft plastic bottles, daily chemical flexible packs, and squeeze containers. The resin flows evenly into ultra-thin structural sections, avoiding weak spots at corners and edges that commonly cause cracking during extrusion and use.
Packaging film production: Perfect for stretch wrap, protective film, and multi-layer coextrusion film products. Its standout puncture resistance helps finished films withstand sharp corners and rough surfaces of packed goods, effectively reducing tearing damage during logistics.
Not suitable scenarios: It is not recommended for rigid, high-load packaging products such as thick-wall stacking barrels and pressure-resistant industrial containers. Its flexible property means it lacks the compression stiffness required for heavy stacking and high-pressure storage environments.
Key selection reminder: Mixing HDPE into an LLDPE run is a common shortcut when material stocks are insufficient. The mismatch rarely causes immediate failure, but it triggers hidden problems in subsequent shifts, including unstable parison tension, uneven wall thickness, and gradually rising scrap rates. This stems from inconsistent melting characteristics and processing windows between the two grades. To maintain stable product quality, HDPE and LLDPE should always be produced on separate lines with independent parameter settings.
