Pre-Blanchard Autogynephilia
This is probably going to be one of my more incendiary essays, all things considered, but I wanted to publish it anyways since I've been thinking about it a lot. This came from an investigation into the sources that Blanchard originally built on for the autogynephilia hypothesis back in 1989 (Blanchard 1989). All english bits from Hirschfeld's 1921 work Sexualpathologie are me shittly translating it with DeepL, I am very sorry.
“The main thing that brings him sexual satisfaction is putting on complete women's clothing. Just the thought of this makes him happy (...) [and] the stronger he fought against the urge to appear as a woman, the more violently and irresistibly the passion broke through again after a while[.] (...) That is why he cannot stand it when people talk about him ‘dressing up, which is masking, disguising himself’” (Hirschfeld, 1921, 198).
All these quotes demonstrate the central tenant of what Magnus Hirschfeld, arguably one of the most influential sexologist of the 20th century, calls transvestitic automonosexualism, a “sexual perversion” as Hirschfeld himself classified it, but what we would today understand to be a fetish or a sexual orientation, as per Anne Lawrence (2004), one of Blanchard’s most faithful disciples. Something that strikes me as interesting is that, if you think about what Ireland and Kronic say in Cute Accelerationism - that “the shaming of autophilias is literally nothing more or less than a prohibition on liking yourself” (Ireland & Kronic, 2024, 94) - this is exactly that. The case study Hirschfeld bases a lot of his conclusions about transvestitic automonosexualism on, is of someone who “cannot stand it when people talk about him ‘dressing up, which is masking, disguising himself.’” Their sexual enjoyment of crossdressing is brought into the forefront - it is, after all, called a “sexual perversion” by Hirschfeld - but there is clearly some undercurrent of wanting to be a woman, or, at the very least, womanly. Even if they derive pleasure from this, even if they are listed as an transvestitic automonosexual, they still believe this to be something more than a fetish, something more than “masking [or] disguising himself,” right? Even when Hirschfeld mentions that their main form of “sexual satisfaction is putting on complete women's clothing” he follows it up by saying that “[j]ust the thought of this makes him happy.” Their sexual attraction to their own womanly form, achieved most successfully when in full feminine dress, is also their source of happiness. Why can’t trans women enjoy their own bodies sexually, why must that be classified and pathologized? It’s literally just “liking yourself” as Ireland and Kronic rightfully point out and, furthermore, sexual interest in a female body doesn’t eschew other reasons for transition nor does it invalidate people who transition because of it. I am essentially arguing against the pathologization of transness, the different typologies Blanchard dreamed up (AGP and HSTS), but giving him the W in terms of him saying that trans women transition because they “love themselves as women” (the literal meaning of autogynephilia) because, as far back as Mr. T[1] in Hirschfeld’s 1921 chapter on automonosexualism, that’s been exactly the case, be it romantically, sexually, spiritually, societally, or for other reasons.
Thank you for reading.
[1] Mr. T is the name of the subject in the case that Hirschfeld analyzes.

The Blanchardian typology, which divides transgender women into Homosexual Transsexuals (HSTS) and Autogynephilic Transsexuals (AGPs), has deeply influenced attitudes within and outside the LGBT community, leading to harmful dynamics that alienate and condemn AGPs while venerating HSTS. Breaking this down:
1. HSTS Tricking Straight Men and Facing Violence
HSTS are often celebrated in LGBT circles for their femininity and ability to "pass" as cisgender women, but this veneration comes with its own dangers. Many HSTS, particularly those in precarious socioeconomic situations, resort to survival strategies that sometimes involve engaging with straight men who may not realize they are trans. When the truth is revealed, these interactions often escalate into violence, reinforcing transphobic stereotypes and putting their lives at risk. Disclosure is important, and groups that encourage HSTS to not disclose have malicious intent most times.
2. AGPs Are Common but Gatekept
AGPs, by contrast, are far more common than is often acknowledged, yet they face systemic gatekeeping within both the medical establishment and LGBT spaces. Many AGPs struggle to access hormones, surgeries, or community support because their experiences of gender are framed as invalid, fetishistic, or perverse. This gatekeeping perpetuates feelings of isolation and shame, preventing them from living authentic lives and contributing to the community.
3. AGPs Demonized for Attraction to Women
The demonization of AGPs is further exacerbated by their attraction to women. Their femininity, coupled with their interest in women, is often pathologized as a sexual kink rather than a legitimate expression of gender. This double standard erases their humanity, framing them as deceptive or predatory, while HSTS are viewed as more "pure" for conforming to heteronormative expectations.
4. Blanchard's Types Are Harmful
Blanchard’s typology itself is deeply flawed and harmful, as it reduces complex experiences of gender into rigid, binary categories. It ignores the social, cultural, and psychological factors that influence gender identity and imposes a reductive lens that forces trans women to prove their validity. This framework sows division within the transgender community, as individuals internalize its harmful stereotypes and turn against one another.
5. Misandrists and Radfems Weaponize Blanchard’s Types
Misandrists and radical feminists have latched onto Blanchard’s framework to further other and dehumanize AGPs, branding them as "fake women" or invaders in women’s spaces. By vilifying AGPs and using the typology to draw lines between "real" and "fake" trans women, these groups perpetuate division and stigma within the LGBT community. This rhetoric harms all trans women, as it reinforces the idea that their identities are contingent upon external validation rather than intrinsic self-awareness.
Rejecting Blanchard’s reductive and divisive framework is essential for fostering inclusivity and understanding within the LGBT community. Embracing diverse experiences of gender and challenging these harmful narratives can pave the way for solidarity and mutual respect.
I am a meta-attracted autogynandromorphile. this means my sexual orientation is an erotic target location error, where i target my eroticism at myself, not other bodies. my sexual orientation is thus geared towards “being a feminized male”.
i live in the social role of male and do not want to leave that role. in fact, my desire is to explicitly be a male, but with superficial feminine physical characteristics. certain aspects of masculine puberty made me extremely depressed, it made me feel violated, disgusted by my very existence, and in adulthood i made the decision to medicalize with estrogen hormone therapy to achieve a feminine appearance. this does not make me a woman or any kind of female, nor do i want it to.
meta-attracted means i am socially “gay” in the sense that i date men. but i am not visually “homosexual” in a conventional way. this does not mean i dont love my fiancé, it means the sexual part of our relationship is not based on raw visual desire, but rather on the desire of how he makes me feel about myself. but i do love him and we have been together so long for a reason. meta-attraction is not “fake attraction”.
