No shade at IkeRev because it’s hard to get history and war right in an otome. Whereas the focus for LOGH is politics and war.
But the setup is parallel, and it’s honestly satisfying my world building itch. Freedom democratic republic faction versus Monarchy faction.
Reinhard : Yang :: Lancelot : Ray

I can’t compare Ray and Yang personality wise, but Yang is absolutely wonderful. He’s our shlumpy lazy warm soft boy trope. Yang’s thing is that he’s a history teacher (?) nerd that got drafted into the military. All he wants to do is retire and read books, but he understands military strategy very well due to his knowledge, so he ends up in this job as Operations Officer and rising in the ranks. His genius ends up saving lives and minimizing casualties, so he stays, even though he rather not war and just sleep and live a normal life.
If you’re a history nerd, you might have already seen this anime, or please check it out. Yell at me about it either way. Watch the original first, then the remake. I hear the remake is not bad, but it’s definitely not as in depth, and it’s easier to go from 80s animation to 2018 military hotties.

Ray...
Thinks Lancelot is objectively the most beautiful person in Cradle. It pisses him off at first! And then it doesn’t.
Takes up stretching for awhile in an effort to get taller. Seriously. When he makes his peace with his height, he puts all that energy into presence instead. But he still keeps his shoulders back and straightens himself up to the full height he does have when at meetings and official stuff.
Lancelot
Thinks Ray is a tragic figure, someone who could be so much better with more refinement or support. He recognizes the undimmable flash of the Young King’s brilliance and thinks it’s sad he will inevitably lose the conflict between their armies anyway, since Lance has the might of the Magic Tower behind him. A shame, really. He doesn’t have much time to think about it, but when it crosses his mind he feels regret.
Just as Ray observes, Lance does, desperately, want someone to ask what he wants, his soul is crying out for someone to please remember he is a hurting person with desires beyond his purpose, and for someone to show him (and others) that they realize he’s not just a commander. He’s been shouldering heavy burdens for such a long time. He wouldn’t let anyone else take them on for him, but it’s one of his deepest sources of his sadness that no one seems personally aware. He has to hide a lot and he’s dying for someone to care enough to look closely anyway.
Ray also...
Has a half dozen wet dreams, as a grown man, all centered on Lancelot. He wakes up aroused and angry— why won’t this snotty asshole leave his dreams alone, at least?! He doesn’t need to see Lancelot crying out while his body is shoved up the bed with every slap of their hips, or smiling so softly and reaching out for Ray when they are done. He doesn’t need to know what the Red King might look like if he got shyly bold and knelt between Ray’s legs on a crimson cushion on the floor. It doesn’t matter how pale scarred hands would shake, or how the vulnerable Adam’s apple would bob, or what tears look like falling from eyes blue or red. It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need this. It doesn’t matter. He repeats this to himself as he jerks off in the shower and his brain and body tell him it matters a lot.
...and most of that is before he’s sheltered by the Red Army after his injury. After he and Lancelot have sex and he returns to Black Army headquarters, Ray grasps at these dreams and touches himself with purpose as he remembers them. There’s some heartache there, a lot of sadness for the ways he now knows Lancelot is isolated. He doesn’t take anyone else to bed in a silent form of kingly solidarity. Thinks this is stupid but also the right thing to do. He nearly tells Fenrir so many times.
And Lancelot has sporadically dreamed of emerald glass figurines in an open display case and the sound of unrestrained laughter since the first time he met Ray. He’s been waking up horny and upset for months now.
He goes back to the room where Ray stayed and takes the pillowcase. He keeps it folded in a black silk pouch in his nightstand, and sometimes tucks it between his own pillowcase and the pillow after difficult days. When the scent is truly gone... he keeps it.
He wants kisses, he privately really really wants kisses somewhere sunny and public and safe, and he will remember Ray kissing his shoulder until the day he dies.
I definitely HC an eventually happy ending for this pair, but there would be a lot of angsty growing for the both of them first. This universe has melancholy. They’d get thrown together again (probably Ray back at Red HQ, I can’t see Jonah letting them get any alone time if Lance was at the Black Army 🤣), have sex again, and take on the Tower together. Sirius knows. Fenrir knows. Kyle knows. Blanc knows.

Sirius is supportive… somewhat. He is all for Lancelot being in a relationship, but with Ray? Ray, who has the emotional maturity of a teenager at worst and an uppity young adult at best? He’s definitely worried for his young King and tells him so flat out, and keeps an eye on the relationship as best he can. Tells both Lancelot and Ray that if they break the other’s heart, he will never forgive them. As the days go by, he is happy to see that Lancelot is a positive influence on Ray’s social skills and maturity, as well as his baking skills – Ray often asking Sirius how to make Lancelot’s favorite desserts so that they can share lemon cakes and orange cookies.
Luka is a little hesitant of the relationship at first, and wants him to be safe when he ventures into Red Territory for more than just business. He makes it his personal duty to educate Ray on all sorts of customs and greetings in Red Territory so that he doesn’t offend himself, and answers any questions that Ray has for him. However, as time goes on, Luka realizes that Ray is wearing a rare, warm smile whenever he comes back from Central after dinner – a smile that he knows is due to having a lovely time with Lancelot – and he can’t help but approve.
Fenrir is definitely happy for his best friend. He is the one that was told all of the plans Ray had for asking Lancelot out, the one who watched him chicken out not once, but twice after peace talks and meetings, and the one who covered for Ray during his first late-night out in Central with Lancelot. He is a ride-or-die friend for this relationship and will support Ray until the very end. He loves hearing about the little tidbits that Ray tells him about Lancelot, and will always patiently listen whenever Ray accidentally rambles on for a little too long during their breaks.
Seth is scandalized. Ray’s dating the Red King, who tried to kill him and take over their territory? Seth is initially suspicious of the relationship and is incredibly worried about an imbalance of power. The type of smothering mother who waits up for Ray to get home and make sure that he hasn’t been hurt and listen to how the date went, demanding more details than he really should be allowed to know. As Ray tells more and more positive stories about Lancelot, Seth begins to relax and starts trusting their relationship and acknowledge that they are happy together.
Jonah doesn’t think Ray is good enough for King Lancelot. He is opposed to the idea of Lancelot dating someone from Black Territory – particularly someone of such a high status. Jonah makes it a point to tell Lancelot this in the early days, and often finds an excuse to be in the room next door whenever Ray is visiting Lancelot in Red Territory so that he can keep an eye on things. As time goes on, he realizes that the King of Spades is having a positive influence on King Lancelot, and he is forced to acknowledge that Lancelot is clearly in love and that this relationship is making him a happier man – which makes him happy in return.
Edgar thinks that this is the funniest thing to in the Red Army for a long time, and the first who is aware of the relationship. He can see it in the way they interact after peace talks and meetings, the glimmer in their eyes and how they always end up talking in a secluded corner of the Gardens. Edgar is in full support of this relationship and never tells when he spies Lancelot coming out in the very early hours of the morning after a night out with Ray. All he wishes for is Lancelot’s happiness.
Zero does not particularly care either way. If Lancelot seems happy, then he considers it a good thing. When he is at parties where Lancelot and Ray are in attendance, he does note that Lancelot is doing better and that the pair of them are clearly in love. He is also one of the first to tell Lancelot that he is happy for their relationship and often calls out his soldiers when they express their hesitance about the relationship. Also is the one who often goes to escort Ray into Red Headquarters so that way he can come in unharmed.
Kyle believes that people need to be happy. Lancelot and Ray are no exception. He is relieved to see that the two Kings are living for themselves and each other. They have both suffered traumatic incidents, and he’s proud they reached the point where they feel comfortable pursuing a relationship with each other. Get a little upset when Lancelot hasn’t gotten enough sleep due to staying out too late the previous evening with Ray, but can never stay mad for long when he realizes that Ray is a positive influence on Lancelot’s social life and emotional state.
