excellent reply. being sorta weird about gender and ace myself, i'm glad the show let me see myself in it. but mostly at the end of the day, i just....ENJOYED it and it didn't need to be perfect, and certainly wasn't - i mean what is??.... Anyway, I think - regrettably, and probably privileged of me - I am discoursed out. I just can't. I think if some of it didn't just feel disingenuous or shallow as opposed to deeply felt or meant, maybe I'd feel differently.

I don’t think that’s privileged at all though!! Knowing when to bow out before you burn out is a GREAT skill and one that I should work harder to cultivate :D Frankly, this isn’t life or death and to me just feels like an extension of the ace discourse that’s plagued tumblr for a few years now, so I think choosing not to engage them on two fronts, as it were, is probably a really smart decision. You gotta pick your battles if you want to win them.

A-fucking-men. I was all set to give the show another chance and then the pregnancy storyline and what that meant for both Amy and River just….hurt me. I already went through it with Scully in a lot of ways, and it’s just…there’s too much of it and it’s awful.

it made me deeply uncomfortable in ways that, as a young teenager, i couldn’t even really express or understand--but one of the things i remember seeing in the discussion surrounding it at the time was a lot of women bringing up the other times similar things had happened, to other female characters at the hands of other writers, and.....ick. it’s just creepy to think how many cis dudes obliviously put in these story elements for like, plot twists or zany scifi or whatever.

And I don't think I love this idea that all criticism should be directed to the writer. There is a place for critique and discussion, but essentially MAILING it or DELIVERING it to the person's face seems....completely ridiculous? That's the part that is frustrating me. Author is Dead interpretation is great, but don't go up to the Author then and argue like they are, metaphorically Not Dead. I'm not sure I'm making sense, but this very thing has been annoying me lately.

I feel you there--I haven’t seen as much of this cross my dash so it hasn’t weighed as heavily on my mind, but I do think that this behavior matches a pattern that I’ve seen happen with other authors with tumblr presences in the past--probably most notably John Green. Obviously it would be different if people were a) criticizing him for a behavior here on tumblr, or b) if GO, I dunno, openly advocated hate crimes or something, or c) Gaiman had at any point invited these kinds of criticisms into his inbox, but as far as I’m aware literally none of that is the case. Like, would I be really intrigued to ask him/the other showrunners about why they choose to make it this way instead of being more explicit, if that was even a conscious decision at all? HECK YEAH I WOULD! But at the end of the day, I think it’s even more important to me as a reader/viewer/whatever to not get overly invested in what the author(s) think or say, and to respect their right to not to be harassed.

That's it exactly. I first started feeling comfortable having a name for the thing that had basically made me feel like an outsider for a good portion of my life thanks to this site just a handful of years ago, but then it quickly became a place where....I simply didn't have the energy to keep up with the justifying of my existence, when I already wasn't feeling great about my existence. I doubt my disappearance from tumblr in general was very noticeable....

but I basically left this site for at least a year, barring some random posts here and there. Only lately, with my due south buddies being equally as interested in Good Omens, have I felt like its been fun being back. Seeing some of the comments direct to Neil here and on Twitter or the takes that I simply don’t see evidence for could have ruined things for me, but I just cut it off. I’m electing to avoid it and just keep with my fun mutuals here.

Honestly, at some point after I graduated from college I slowly stopped hanging out on tumblr as much as I had--in part because work kept me busy and exhausted, but also in part because of some other stuff I had going on--until it reached a point where I was basically just using tumblr to chat with folks on IM and reblog things without much expectation of conversation. A lot of my friends had moved on to other fandoms and/or platforms, and a lot of the ones that were still here didn’t seem to using tumblr as much anymore, and honestly it seemed like we were all preparing to jump ship. And then nsfw purge last November happened, and in the scramble to preserve as much as we could tumblr bizarrely seemed newly invigorated. People were active and engaged and not just bitterly rehashing old arguments, and GO, despite its discourse, really seems to have kept that going.

Anyways, this is a tl;dr to say that although I did notice, it didn’t really stand out to me that you specifically had kind of faded from tumblr because it felt to me like most people were fading from tumblr, but! I’m so glad that we’re back!

absolutely! I don't even deal with the ace community here on tumblr just bc no matter what there is a huge current of discourse always going on I find uncomfortable. I really didn't know how to bow out when it was appropriate and it needlessly made my anxiety and depression worse. I've since learned it just isn't worth it. Took a long, long time to put it into practice, though.

I don’t want to, like, turn into an ace discourse blog for the night, but. It’s really bizarre to me how only just 4-5 years ago there was a huge, strong, welcoming ace community on tumblr, and how quickly ace exclusion escalated and kind of tore that community apart. I mean, it still exists, I think, but from what I hear/know folks are basically constantly engaged with ace discourse trying to just like justify their right to be here. It’s. yeah.
