*we were frequently babysat by our German-born, German-speaking maternal grandmother who lived upstairs - then downstairs, when her knees got bad - and had subscriptions to Amerika Woche and Meine Familie Und Ich. She sometimes picked up copies of Stern and Der Spiegel when she went to the German grocery store and apotheker. Our German cousins came to visit us in the US many times and we've visited them multiple times too.
