I haven’t really spent that much time thinking up an entire modern AU for Icefjord beyond what I already mentioned, but I’d love to hear what you guys think! I just know Karel probably wears skinny black jeans everywhere. Probably even to bed and in the shower. (I’m kidding. Or am I?)

Okay but i have a question. Where are you from, actually? Like, youre not Turkish but seems like you have a great fondness over this country/language/culture and idk im just curious. I absolutely love your blog btw!!

I was born in Miami, FL! I grew up in a pretty secluded part of town where most Latino immigrants came, like my family, so I didn’t get a lot of American exposure. I guess I’m a Cuban version of a Chicano?? idk it’s not my favorite subject to talk about haha,, But I had a grandfather from Pakistan who made my mothers side of the family all Muslim. Because of that, I sorta had a divided upbringing?? It’s embarrassing and complicated haha

So, being a little nenesito and watching Hetalia back in 2011.. the first thing I usually looked for was a character I could associate and relate to (like most kids do) but most characters were strictly European or Asian (what I’m very obviously not.) plus APH Cuba looked and acted nothing like any Cuban I knew.. even my visits to Cuba proved that he’s just… bad… so, knowing Turkey was an Islamic country, I latched on to him at a very young age [bc my Islamic exposure]. I was also very self-conscious about my skin so he was the only character I could comfortably cosplay without feeling awkward. This was pretty hard since.. most Hetalia show characters were white.. 

The more I grew up, the more I became interested in history– so, naturally, I would begin with my favorite character: Turkey! I admit that, despite as much as I grew to dislike the negative stereotypes and lack of consideration the show puts into some of its characters, Hetalia was the main reason why I was guided into my current-day love for the culture and history. I find it all so fascinating and as much as I realize that I’ll always be an outsider to the culture, I just hope with all of my heart that I can do it justice with my blog and my studies. I don’t feel like I want to pretend like I’m Turkish… I just appreciate the landscape, the language… everything… just as other people have their own interests in life. I don’t set out to make my own life more “Turkish” because I can’t deny my own heritage. Sort of like how Roman history buffs don’t go walking around in tunics with shields. [If anything, this also helped push me to read about my own culture’s history! But this is an APH Turkey blog not an APH Cuba blog.]

As a whole, I think that the way humans interact with one another throughout history is an incredibly interesting subject. Turkey became my comfort zone, for a lack of better words, in studying the history of literal humans interacting with one another. I feel it’s unfair to only talk about Turkey, though, since Germany also plays a huge role in my studies as well. I’ve been learning German for years and you wouldn’t believe my surprise when I looked into Turkish German Politics… But, anyways, ahh this is just a lot of blabber to really try and explain something that doesn’t actually have an explanation. I just get asked this a lot and I thought I might as well make a giant post about it so I don’t get as many asks anymore!  It’s a bit embarrassing haha,,,,,,

A lot of people don’t branch out of their own cultures because it’s ‘new’ or ‘foreign’ and I say no to that. I say there’s nothing wrong with learning something out of your own worldview because it actually expands your horizons! This blog, as a whole, is just my attempt at voicing that love of mine in hope that my followers can learn something new and maybe find their own passion in Turkish History and/or Culture and set out to research and learn more themselves (or maybe, like myself, in studying a culture unlike their own.) . And, of course, nothing is perfect, everything will have its flaws, especially when it comes to the topic of politics, but when you can accept those you can really find the beauty in life and be grateful for the things you’ve been blessed with already [every country has its flaws…you can never escape those..] so I don’t mean to “idealize” Turkey or any country that I study… I just enjoy observing and learning new things. Turkey is always just full of surprises!
