Rayne gave a smile when the woman turned back around and spoke to her. These stupid things were awful enough with someone, but alone? They were even worse. Combine that with the fact that some of these men thought women were nothing but a conquest, and you had one awful night for Rayne.
"Well, we think alike then. I wouldn’t get through these things without some alcohol and people to make fun of. Though they all look at me funny when I order a scotch," Rayne rolled her eyes.
"I guess I did, in a way. I’m an artist who isn’t starving or struggling, so it’s like I have to come to these things, even if I’d rather not. If I don’t, then I don’t sell my sculptures. The only people who can afford my work seem to be the very people who are in charge of these things. But my friend didn’t seem to be able to make it tonight, so I got stuck here alone.”
It also helped that her friend often pretended to be her boy friend so people—skeevy old men—left her alone. But tonight he had business at he casino that had to be dealt with.
Darcy's brow raised and the corners of her lips quirked up into a playful little smirk. "Scotch? Good choice. Stark tends to have some of the best scotch. Probably because I think he actually just lives off it," she joked. She hadn't gotten any weird looks when she got herself wine from the bar, but she could see how some of the people here might look at a woman odd for getting herself a drink like that. It was stupid in Darcy's opinion, but what could be done?
"Artist, huh? That's cool. I'm a scientist wrangler. Which sounds cool until you realize that just means getting coffee and making sure your scientist eats regularly. Though it does come with such glamorous perks as being dragged along as a third wheel to parties where said scientist just hangs off her boyfriend, who are the only two people you actually know well enough to want to socialize with."
She'd already had two glasses of wine and that just made her tendency to talk that much worse. She would ramble if she was allowed to. It seemed like she was likely to do just that. "Sorry your friend couldn't make it. That sucks. But, hey, food and an open bar, so it's not all bad, right?"
