The soft patter of feet echoes down the hallway as you hurry along, trying to stop the crinkling noises the gift bag in your hands makes every time you take a step.
You come to a stop outside your dad’s bedroom door, knocking on the door. When you don’t hear anything, you stand on your tiptoes and turn the handle, pushing it open a little. You peek around the doorjamb, spotting your dad still fast asleep. You creep in as quietly as you can, the gift bag making too many loud noises for your liking.
You set the bag down by the edge of the bed and poke at your dad’s shoulder. He doesn’t wake up right away, and that’s a problem. You lean in next to his ear, cup your hands around your mouth.
“Good morning!” You whisper-shout.
Kyle shoots up and you jump back, a sheepish smile crossing your cheery face as he blinks blearily at you.
“Hi, daddy! You was taking forever to wakes up, so I had to helps you.”
“Uh-huh. C’mere.”
He helps you climb up onto the bed and stops you from tumbling off when you lean over to pull the bag up.
“I gots you somethin’,” you say, dropping the gift bag in front of him.
“You ‘gots me somethin’?” He questions, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
He pulls the bag closer, rummaging through an absurd amount of tissue paper till he finds a small stuffed animal.
“You got me a teddy bear?”
“Mhm-hm! It’s for val-in-times day,” you say, scrunching your nose as you sound it out. “Uncle John said you gives people you love presents on valintimes, and I loves you, so I gots you a teddy bear ‘cause I loves them too. Do you loves it?”
“‘Course I do, sweet pea. And I ‘loves’ you, too.” Kyle scoops you into a hug, glancing at his alarm clock, the time far too early for his liking. “You’re sure you’re not still tired?”
You shake your head, tugging at the loose thread on his shirt sleeve. “No, I wanna play now,”
“Yeah, I thought so.” He sighs, casting away his hopes for more slumber. “C’mon, let’s go make breakfast.”
