Word Count: 370
The soft patter of feet echoes down the hallway as you hurry along, trying to stop the crinkling noises the gift bag in your hands makes every time you take a step.
You come to a stop outside your dad’s bedroom door, knocking on the door. When you don’t hear anything, you stand on your tiptoes and turn the handle, pushing it open a little. You peek around the doorjamb, spotting your dad still fast asleep. You creep in as quietly as you can, the gift bag making too many loud noises for your liking.
You set the bag down by the edge of the bed and poke at your dad’s shoulder. He doesn’t wake up right away, and that’s a problem. You lean in next to his ear, cup your hands around your mouth.
“Good morning!” You whisper-shout.
Kyle shoots up and you jump back, a sheepish smile crossing your cheery face as he blinks blearily at you.
“Hi, daddy! You was taking forever to wakes up, so I had to helps you.”
“Uh-huh. C’mere.”
He helps you climb up onto the bed and stops you from tumbling off when you lean over to pull the bag up.
“I gots you somethin’,” you say, dropping the gift bag in front of him.
“You ‘gots me somethin’?” He questions, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
He pulls the bag closer, rummaging through an absurd amount of tissue paper till he finds a small stuffed animal.
“You got me a teddy bear?”
“Mhm-hm! It’s for val-in-times day,” you say, scrunching your nose as you sound it out. “Uncle John said you gives people you love presents on valintimes, and I loves you, so I gots you a teddy bear ‘cause I loves them too. Do you loves it?”
“‘Course I do, sweet pea. And I ‘loves’ you, too.” Kyle scoops you into a hug, glancing at his alarm clock, the time far too early for his liking. “You’re sure you’re not still tired?”
You shake your head, tugging at the loose thread on his shirt sleeve. “No, I wanna play now,”
“Yeah, I thought so.” He sighs, casting away his hopes for more slumber. “C’mon, let’s go make breakfast.”

Headcanons on what Kyle Rayner would be like as your dad! | requested <3
Dad!Kyle who always encourages you when you start to doubt yourself
Dad!Kyle who’s so used to eating like a broke college student he has to (re)learn to cook meals that aren’t spaghetti or mac’n’cheese
Dad!Kyle who’s self-conscious of his parenting abilities and is always questioning if he made the right decision on a matter
Dad!Kyle whose got a whole wall dedicated to your “masterpieces” that he keeps adding to as you grow
He’s got your crayon scribbles from when you were three, a very smiley lopsided flower from when you were seven, etc, etc
Dad!Kyle who helps you with last minute school projects with no complaints
He even ropes in other people to help. You need a popsicle stick bridge? He’s got John on facetime giving advice on where to place the support beams sticks so it’ll hold the most weight. A mousetrap racer? Simon better answer his phone
Dad!Kyle who can get a bit… over-protective at times
He doesn’t want you to feel like he’s smothering you, but he also doesn’t want you to feel like he doesn’t care, so he ends up overcompensating and then feeling bad about it, ending with him apologizing to you. He’s still trying to figure out the right amount of parental involvement.
Dad!Kyle who will draw the most detailed pictures at your request when you’re outside playing with sidewalk chalk
He’s blending the colours, he’s adding shadows, he’s making the bunny rabbit look like it’s about to bravely jump over the crack on the sidewalk
