Reason being I don’t wanna find them on my own is because they sometimes have weird tags and other random bs and I honestly don’t feel like doing all that trouble just to read about a weird blue dog in a alleyway that has god as his best friend

So I just thought like

We don't know what exactly happened to Joey and Jude's mom. It's obvious she isn't around anymore though, which plays a huge impact on their lifes.

From what I gathered, the portal has been used before. Their dad (Jake) possesses a globe that depicts Alternia, with a huge cross on it, which I assume is where the portal spawned last time.

But who went in there?

I think, at first, it was Joey's and Jude's mom. She never returned.

Jake, distraught with the loss of his wife, followed her, and because he probably was actually armed and not afraid to kill, he succeeded to not die. He searched for his wife but had to return eventually.

Trying to cope with all this has led him to travel lots and resulted in the neglection of his kids.

Alternatively, he never managed to follow her and had been searching for a way to follow all across the Earth, never seeing Joey's heirloom key, because maybe her mom gave it to her, telling her it's a secret.

Or maybe I'm just thinking too much about this lol.
