Barry slowly turned around, almost turtle slow. He arched a brow at Roxy. “What does that mean?” He questioned, completely oblivious to WHAT she was trying to get at. Boy, this guy was dense. If it wasn’t blatant flirting, he was going to miss it. “Hey, have you seen my favorite mug that Joe gave me?”

Of course she didn’t know, she was too modest to think about herself as what made this Earth so special. Barry swallowed the sudden thickness in his throat. “It’s you, Kara. YOU make is special.”

“I don’t think damaged is the right word.” His words are careful, spoken after he gives her question careful consideration. He wanted to say no, deny it flat out, but he knows that something is broken, feels it in their every interaction. He doesn’t think that makes their relationship irreparable, but: “I think we’ve changed.” 

They’re different people now. Only … not even that -- Diana has changed, grown, and he’s still stuck in the past. It’s not a bad thing (not in her case, anyway), but the hard truth is that they didn’t do it together, grow. They’ve changed, they couldn’t go on pretending they hadn’t.

“We’ve just gotta,” he shrugs, mouth lifting into a half smile, “start over. Get to know whoever we are now.” There’s another option, one he worries is on Diana’a mind given her defeated tone, but he can’t bring himself to voice it. Not when walking away means leaving behind someone he loves, the only familiar connection to his past Steve has left.

He had been sent out by Ava to investigate another possible being, something about ‘oh it seems to be too big for Gary to deal with’, and here he was. Stuck dealing with civilians, including the one he was currently looking at, telling him what he could see with his own two eyes.
