Ian and Barbara's first month on the TARDIS:

Kidnapped by condescending old man who gets them all kidnapped by cave people, overnight stay in a cell after being kidnapped by fascist tin cans + radiation sickness, several days in radioactive bogs/caves, spaceship they now call home almost explodes (they get blamed for it), weeks of dehydration in the desert (kidnapped by marco polo).

One thing I really adore about 60s Who is just how much they were pushing the boundaries of the format straight out of the gate. The concept itself of a consistent cast with the ability to go anywhere in time and space is already such a grand wellspring of potential, but not content to just make a bunch of average sci-fi stories and historical dramas the writers, producers and all members of the crew quickly begin using the unique format to do wild things barely possible on their budget and largely unheard of for BBC dramas.

The howl-around visuals for the opening credits and utterly revolutionary methods of music production helmed by Delia Derbyshire. The tremendous visual experimentation required to create stories like The Space Museum or The Web Planet. That one shot in The Sensorites that I keep gushing about!

Stories like The Keys of Marinus and The Chase toying with the serial format, The Time Meddler shattering the shows pre-established rules for historicals, The Savages interrogating core ideas of the show, the character arc they put the First Doctor through gradually as they interrogate his world view!!

Occasionally the writers would do something so high concept it couldn't adequately be put to screen like The Celestial Toymaker, and sometimes the production team gets a script of even greater ambition and PULLS IT OFF like The Mind Robber!

Then of course the conception and execution of the first regeneration, a total recasting and recharacterisation of the titular character- born from necessity but executed so well that it has allowed the show to continue for well over 60 years. The Power of the Daleks is a masterpiece that even manages to find a new angle on the Daleks to terrify us while juggling a new Doctor!

Not every one of these experiments succeeds of course, but the creativity on display in the first decade of the show is just incredible! The show would continue to do exciting and unique things, but nothing quite compares to those early years. Once the show established itself it began to fall into habits and aside from the occasional lightning bolt of a story seemed to forget how to shatter its own preconceptions, which isn't innately bad because the stories are largely really great, but when Doctor Who pushes itself it truly ascends.

Imagining the First Doctor shortly after The Dalek Invasion of Earth sat in Susan's old room long after Ian and Barbara have gone to sleep. Holding close to his chest the worn out shoe he'd taken from Susan before saying goodbye. A quiet moment.

They'd ran away from their people and their home together and now for the first time he's a lone renegade with no-one from home but the TARDIS. His Granddaughter has grown up and still he must journey on.
