The color of that stone! The clearness of that water! What a place to read!
Book, Dog and Willow.
My favourite new reading spot...
Isn't it amazing what can be achieved with a few stray willow cuttings, a spare couple of hours and a complete lack of skill? An impulsive moment a couple of years ago has resulted in my new favourite place to read, and not only is it both shady and sunny (thanks to the imperfectly woven willow), but it also hides me from anyone who might wish to interrupt my reading. I have children...enough said.
Oh, and just to add to it's magic, it has not only a standing stone, but an orchard for company.
My latest read isn't bad, either. Peculiar Ground by Lucy Hughes-Hallet -another library find (I am so impressed with my little local library). I'm only part of the way through, but it feels like a charming story hiding its sharp teeth. It hasn't caught me in its momentum yet, I think a little more time under the willows is called for, but I love LHH's language and the sensation that something darker is lurking beneath the pristine surface of the Wychwood Estate. And, of course, I love a book with a map...
Good book, good reading spot and a very good dog.
A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.

“I'm everything that makes everything. I'm everything that unmakes everything. I'm fire. I'm flood. I'm pestilence. I'm the ink, the paper, the grass, the tree, the leaves, the leaf, the greenness in the leaf. I'm the vein in the leaf. I'm the voice that tells no story.” - Ali Smith, Autumn

Yes, I’m reading out by the standing stone and the sky has darkened. Either it’s the end of the world or I’m going to get wet. I love reading outside but it’s a risky business. Btw, I am loving this book - The Long Weekend by Adrian Tinniswood: a fab research resource charting the slow decline of the beautiful English country house and her rather un-beautiful masters.
