Making Book Lists (And Keeping Them)
Buzzfeed has made the connection between books and their cross-media transformations (amalgamations?) in the form of this list of 16 movies coming out, all inspired by books! The list reminded me of Hank Green's Read It 1st campaign from a few years back; I was quick to make a vow that I would not see a movie based on a book that I hadn't yet read (and then broke that promise when I realized that it was inconvenient--I do try!). I must say, however, that reading before viewing has a lot of advantages; with The Hunger Games, I was able to get more in-depth with the content; with Harry Potter, I got to watch highlights of what I read (in a sense); and how I boasted, having read Coraline three times, about what I knew was different.
I want to look at the way in which books are translated, condensed, visualized (or cinematized), and experienced, as movies. (Try writing sentences that make sense when loud conversations are going on--brain nonsense that I probably wont remember to edit later).
From this year's list, I have read Divergent (Veronica Roth), The Fault in Our Stars (John Green), The Giver (Lois Lowry), and most of Winter's Tale (Mark Helprin). I think I can make a goal of this, especially if I team up with my uncle who runs an annual review list of all the movies he saw.
