Thomas J. Burns was a watchmaker and repairman by trade, but was best known for his politics. He was involved with the Socialist Party of Oregon. At his watch repair/book shop on W. Burnside in Portland, one could find the various pamphlets, tracts and newsletters that he published, such as The Red Flag, The Harpoon and The Fax. He posted handmade signs in the window of his store that voiced his opinions, including his dislikes of Communists, Republicans, facists, organized religions, big businesses and the Bennett Plan.
