Good morning! This week is Banned Books Week! Book bans have become more rampant in the US in the last couple years. The librarians who have been fighting these bans have received death threats and/or lost their jobs. This is unacceptable. Banning books is the beginning of very slippery slope for our democracy. I’m going to be posting content about book bans all week to raise awareness about this issue. Day 14: Final Banned Book of the Day is Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson This 1999 young-adult book about a teenager dealing with the effects of sexual assault was notably called “soft pornography” in a newspaper op-ed that drew notice from Anderson herself. Speak’s honesty about its protagonist’s trauma and the subsequent social shunning she endures has made it a perennial classic—and a target for criticism.
