God, that sound is so annoying.
She gets that he's a baby, but my fucking god, it's never ending. Over and over its high-pitched screaming. She can't even complain about it because his mother, her stepmother Shelia, is just gonna "What do you want me to do? He's your brother, get used to it! I don't care about your feelings, he's my son. Grow up!"
The young woman has her mid terms in two weeks, forensic science. How can she study when all day every day this nagging bitch is whining to Joel about the baby? When said baby is crying over everything, anything?
She barely saw her father in the past week. She misses him. But every time she went to talk to him, even just to say hi, it's "Not now baby, I gotta help your mom. I can't talk right now sugar, your brother is gonna wake up soon. I'm tired baby, can we talk about this tomorrow?"
Before the baby, before Shelia, Joel and his daughter would spend so much time together, going out, movie nights, real conversations, and....other stuff. But not anymore, it's been scarce passing by, a quick acknowledgment of her and pushing on.
Today she finally got a chance at some real peace and quiet, Shelia taking the baby to her mother's house to spend some time over there. She could get some work done and actually have a chance to study.
Shelia shouts from downstairs. "We'll be back around eight!" She could hear the smooch of her step mother and father’s lips touching. Disgusting. She really doesn't care if she and that kid don't come back at all.
When the door closes and locks, she closes my room door and starts to play some music. Cracking open a textbook, she sits at my desk, and begins to study. About two hours later, a knock on her door. "Sweetheart? Can I come in?" Dad.
"Sure dad." He comes in a bit too quickly, almost as if was excited, and shuts the door. "Hey honey, how's it going?" He must be bored without his precious family.
"Fine dad. Just reading. What do you need." She huffed out. Without looking up, she can already tell he's taken back by the attitude. She feels a little bad, but he hasn't paid any attention to her, she doesn’t care if she’s being childish. She’s his firstborn.
"Whoa what's the mouthiness sugar? I just wanted to come and check up on my best girl." Joel takes a seat on the bed. "Very quiet today huh?"
"Yeah, your wife and kid aren't here for the first time ever." She's reading the same sentence over and over again, a bit distracted by the cologne he’s wearing.
"Don't be like that, I know you and Shelia don't see eye to eye, but he's your brother." He sighs.
"A brother I didn't ask for, a brother you care more about. Please dad, we both know you’re only here because they aren’t
He scoffs, rubbing his chin. "You're right Sugar, I came up here because they aren't here. But it doesn't mean that I care more about them than you, you gotta know that right?" He stands up and puts his hands on my shoulders. "Come on baby, don't be mean. Come talk to me, tell me what's going on."
He grabs her arm softly and pulls her out of the chair to the bed. Something in his daughter feels warm, a little giddy even. After they get comfortable, he says, "Tell me what's new baby. I miss our chats, Sugar."
He holds the back of her hand, rubbing it with his thumb. "I haven't been doing much, just studying. You know my exams are coming up."
"Yeah baby, I know. And I'm so, so proud of you." He hugs her to him. "Come here, it's been a while since I held you, right?" It has. Too long. She hasn't had a real hug from him in two months.
It's not weird to keep track, right?
He maneuvers her onto his lap, a silly sight, this 20- something-year-old woman sitting on her father's lap, and rubbing her back. "It's been a while since I had you, huh baby?"
"You've been too busy paying attention to her, to him. Ignoring me." She pouted at him.
"Oh, no, never, never, I couldn't ignore my girl, my favorite girl hmm?" She turns her face away from him. "Can you look at me? Look at Daddy Princess."
She looks back to him. "I just miss you, Daddy. Tired of being left behind." He feels awful. He hasn't been spending enough time with his girl and look where that's gotten them. Her feelings hurt and he felt like shit.
He gives her a soft kiss on the cheek. "I'm sorry baby, I didn't mean to, I promise." A kiss on the other cheek. "Let me make it up to you, okay?" A kiss on the lips.
