Kung Lao is a hopeless romantic TRUST ME GUYS
Like he’s always thought and dreamed of settling down and starting a family with someone:( it doesn’t matter if the kids are adopted or by blood he’ll love them all the same
His biggest dream is to settle down on a farm with his partner, and teaching his kids Kombat.
So when he meets you, and he truly sees you—he’s all in. Like you two are hanging out on a Tuesday night with Raiden and Johnny and Madame Bo’s. And he makes a stupid joke he won’t remember in like a week but you think it’s the funniest thing in the world.
You giggle madly and end up laughing so hard that you snort. He’s not sure his even is all that funny, but seeing you double over in laughter red faced, eyes squeezed shut, damn near face first in your noodles?
It’s like warmth blooms in his chest, colors become more vivid, and it’s so intense he feels a little dizzy. It was as terrifying as it was irresistible to fall deeper into the feeling. When you parted that night, after he insisted on walking you home, he felt hollow walking without you beside him. A deep longing for your presence—the absence of you completely unbearable.
After that moment, his love for you is obvious, like he’s all heart eyes and wistful sighs. Everyone knows I fear. But he only acts like this from a distance, when he’s with you and the group he’s like the regular Kung Lao but now he’s boasting 10 times harder trying to impress you.
He’s different from that too, when it’s just the two of you. He’s much quieter. It’s almost starting how he goes from boasting loudly about being the next great Kung Lao, to just Kung Lao who craves validation from others and always feels secondary.
“Raiden and I have grown up together…but I’ve been seen as his shadow. Sometimes I feel like that’s all I’ll be.” He admitted softly one day. You turned to look at him and nodded softly. “I don’t think so. I think you shine in your own way. And that you don’t have to be the next great Kung Lao, because I think you already are.” You smiled softly, and so did he
“I just…how does one explain the feeling of being second to someone else. I don’t know how to articulate it to him. What if he thinks I’m crazy?” You giggled softly. “Lao it’s Raiden! He’s the most willing to put himself in someone else’s shoes I’ve ever seen. I’m sure he’ll understand.
Slowly you admitted “I can kind of understand too. That feeling festers easily, it’s important to be stronger than those feelings. And not letting them control you.” He nodded, eyes fluttering to you.
“I don’t want this to sound rude but, how do you understand.” You laughed a little, and replied “It’s kind of stupid but..my older sister. She’s thinner than me so she was always the pretty sister and I was the ugly one. I was her shadow. Her fat shadow.” You admitted with a voice that was thick with emotions. “Ugly?! You?! That’s insane!” He scoffed, but then in a much softer voice he added “I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone as radiant as you. Or someone who understands me as much as you do.”
Your feelings grow slow while his grow stronger by the day. You didn’t know the true depth of your feelings until you were sitting Star Gazing with Kung Lao, watching them sparkle and shine softly. But Lao was only looking at you. “It’s beautiful..” you muttered. He hummed “Incredibly so.” You turned to look at him and made eye contact
He stared at you so lovingly, so intensely, you couldn’t look away. All you could see was him. That’s when you realized. Just that softly italicized oh moment.
He’s also a yearner!! My source? Me🩶
Like bro fumbles one (1) time and makes it his mission to win you back. Like he probably made a bad joke about something and it sparked a big fight. So when you walked out with a huff declaring the relationship over, he goes into shock.
He cries and rages about how stupidly he let you go, fully convinced you’d be his ‘one who got away’. He’s also ready to just never get into a another relationship, fully devoted to you after the breakup
when he catches wind that you got set up on a blind date by a friend to try and force you to get over him
He runs to your home in a flood of tears to try and stop you. So when he manages to get you before you leave, he does the one thing he thought he’d never do. Beg
Fully on his knees hugging your toros begging you to stay through tears. “Please I..I’ve never had someone understand me like you do. You see me. Not who I project onto the world. Not Raidens shadow. Me. And I was dumb and stupid and I let you go. But I can’t let you go, not without fighting for you first. Because I don’t want you stuck with some guy doesn’t pull his weight or who doesn’t even know you don’t like peanuts or your sesame seed allergy. I…please my lotus. Please let me have your again.”
He’s well aware people could see and call him pathetic but right now he doesn’t particularly care. He just wants you.
You crouch down to hug him and press a gentle kiss to his temple. “Come inside, Lao. I’ll cancel and we can talk.” Relief flood him and he scrambled inside behind you.
Once you’re both back together..by the elder gods he’s so happy. He giggles. Giggles.
Kung Lao was and is never shy about affection. He’s always holding your hand, or has his hand around your waist pulling you against him. Also is always pressing a kiss to your face. Just like “Oh yeah he told me that *kiss* I can’t believe he said that.”
Kung Lao is also a GINORMOUS cuddle bug. Loves it when you lay on top of his or just latch onto him like koala. Like yes babe use him like he’s your personal teddy bear he loves it. Please use him🙏

Calls you his wife before you’re engaged too. “Yeah my wife will have that without peanuts and please make hers extra spicy!” “Sorry I can’t, date night with the wife.” “You’ll never believe what my wife told me about that!” And so on
And for all his bragging and boasting, he’s the human equivalent of a puppy dog with you I fear
Because when he hangs up his hat when he comes home to you..he’s just just Kung Lao. Not the next great Kung Lao, nor a Earthrealm defender. Just Kung Lao. A doting partner who sings off key on purpose to make you laugh. Who braids your hair in the morning before he goes to train. Who knows all your favorite foods and drinks at every restaurant. Who paints your nails, does face masks, and paints with you. He’s just yours and you’re just his.
