It wasn't like JJ to be vulnerable. Everyone knew how his dad was : a violent alcoholic, always hitting his son. Clearly, Luke Maybank didn't care at all about JJ Maybank, it didn't matter that the blood running throught their veins was the same, that man was not made to be a father.
Today was no different for the teenager.
He had taken the blame for Pope, the nice boy who had to go to university, while he was the problematic kid with no future. His dad didin't like having to pick him up from jail, at all. It resulted in him getting badly beaten.
Now he was in your home, knocking on your bedroom door. You were sitting at your desk, wearing nothing but an oversized tshirt and some panties. Your focus was on your homework, just like it had been for the last few hours. You weren't expecting anyone today, so you thought it was just your mom. "..I'm busy, mom."
After a bit, the door slowly opened, footsteps were slightly heard. Each step was hurting him, a bruise already forming on his cheekbone. "...too busy for me ?"
You raised your head, looking at your boyfriend. The two of you hadn't been dating for a long time, but you had been friends since forever. Since always, you were the one he would run to if something was wrong, and he was the one you were going to when life got hard. Your relationship made everything stronger.
Your breath caught at the sight of him, your eyes softening. You immediately knew his father hit from the cut on his lip, the black eye, the bruise on his cheekbone. You put your pen down, standing up. You gently tugged him further in, closing the door behind him. "Sit, Jay."
He sat on the edge of your bed, wincing. You followed, sitting against the headboard and urging him to come closer, which he did, nuzzling in your arms. One hand rubbed gentle circles on his back, the other playing with his hair. "You want to talk about it ?"
He didn't answer, simply burying himself further into your arms, head nuzzled in your chest. The warmth radiating from you was soothing for him, the familiar scent of your perfume was a source of comfort. He didn't need to talk, to explain the hell going on in his head. Here, in your arms, nothing mattered.
You pressed a gentle kiss to his temple, a gesture to show comfort. The two of you didn't have to talk, you could just lay there with him, holding him tightly. For the moment, it was just the two of you, away from his monster of dad.
Seeing your boyfriend like that was never easy, you never could get used to that kind of sight. Blood on his clothes, bruises and cuts everywhere. You couldn't even imagine the damage going on under his clothes. But having him here, knowing he trusted you to take care of him, that meant the world to you.
Summary: There was a lot of things you could’ve said. But you said the one thing you had been waiting for your father to tell you or your brother. You took it as your obligation as being the older sibling to do right by him and let him know the truth.

“Pope, it's like Tetris!”
“How the hell is it like Tetris?!” The boy exclaimed in exasperation. “I’m using a crane to pull a golden cross out from the hull of the ship! This is nothing like Tetris!”
“Well, with that attitude it isn’t.”
Everything that you and the rest of the Pogues had been doing had led up to this moment. From finding the cross to dealing with Rafe and Ward, and now where you couldn’t help but feel the anxiety grow as you impatiently watched your best friend try to carefully lift the golden cross out of the ship. After putting up with so much annoyance from both Pope and JJ inside that small shipping container, you weren’t leaving here without that cross.
Before you had embarked on this journey of risk and discovery, you hadn’t even been a part of it at the start. It had only been when your brother sought out your expertise in history that you were brought along. And since then, you created irresistible friends and grown a lot closer with your brother. Able to quickly realize that his protectiveness with you had grown even more with you now being included on this journey in the game of risk.
Having successfully gotten the cross out, the sound of yells below the hatch you stood on gained your attention. Barely able to respond when a gunshot rang out with a cold bite of pain stabbing into your side. A cry falls from your lips as you collapsed forward, grasping the back of the cockpit seat, hoping it would keep you from instantly going into a state of shock.
“Y/n!” Pope exclaimed, trying to look back at you and control the crane. Which wasn’t exactly working as he had ordered Cleo to drop the rope that held onto the cross. But when doing so, Rafe had rushed over and grabbed ahold of said rope.
Touching your side, you hissed at the splotch of crimson soaking into your white tank top. Face scrunching up in pain as you let your head fall back and rest against the metal wall in the cabin of the crane. “Oh, JJ is so going to kill me.” A groaned chuckle fell from your lips, glancing down at the wound.
“Hey, don’t say that,” Pope ordered. “I’m going to get you out of here.”
“No.” You shook your head, crying when you stood to your feet. Legs wobbling under how suddenly your upper body weighed a thousand pounds. Swallowing the lump in your throat as you let out a heavy breath, looking at your friend with a sharp look. “I’m getting you out of here.”
With a bloody hand, you reached toward the console and pressed the detach button. Unhooking the small tether around the cross and causing it to go falling over the edge of the boat. “Without any cross, you have no choice but to go.”
“Then what about you?” Pope was pulled out of the seat with you taking his place. He could already see the cold sweat influencing your body that screamed in agony.
“I’ll be fine, Pope,” you reassured. “Get out to the boat. I’ll see you down there.”
“You better or I’ll kill you myself.”
You watched Pope climb out the top of the crane window, carefully climbing down and dropping to the ship floor. A sigh fell from your lips as you chuckled, hissing in pain. “No you won’t, sweetheart.”
Taking control of the crane, you saw Rafe still holding onto the rope connected to the cross. So, with a twisted idea in mind, you brought the crane over, panting with eyes growing heavier. You lowered the crane bit till Rafe had to helpless watch it applies weight to his stomach. A grin formed on your lips as you pulled your hands to rest against your wound. “That’s what you get for cheating on me.”
Using this chance of freedom, you climbed out of the same spot as Pope had. Using the protective bars on the hull to shakily climb down. But with your hands being damp with your own blood, you only made it to the second bar before you went falling to the ground.
The initial impact knocked the wind out of you. Gasping as you writhed on the ground, battling with your body to just take a breath in. When done so, you shakily rolled onto your stomach and limped towards the edge of the boat. Hearing the yells of the pirates helping Rafe out from under the crane bit and the rope.
“Y/n!”
Right over the edge, you found your friends sitting in a boat, with your brother with them. A smile formed on your lips as your lips parted to speak. But a gunshot rang out and you froze up. JJ’s smile washed away when he saw the centre of your stomach turn red before your body lifelessly fell forward into the ocean with a loud clap.
“Y/n!” He jumped over the edge of the boat, swimming as fast as he could to get to you. His arms and entire body aching. Heart thundered inside his chest like a drum as he could see your body floating in the water.
When he made it to you, he carefully flipped you onto your back. “No, don’t do this to me, Y/n,” he panted. “Please, don’t do this.”
The boat filled with your friends pulled up behind him, quickly lifting you into the boat where you choked on your blood. JJ quickly climbs inside and cups your cheeks. “Hey, stay awake,” he ordered. “Don’t you dare close your eyes, Y/n.”
Your lips flickered into a smile before you cried at the pain of Sarah applying pressure to your wound. Gritting your crimson-stained teeth as your brother’s tears beat against your cheeks. He was always such a suck when it came to you getting hurt.
“I know it hurts but just hold on, ok?” JJ tried to console you, plead for you to just hold on a bit longer.
But he felt his body freeze when one of your trembling hands cupped his cheek. Lips curling into a soft smile with a tear sliding down your cheek. Your face scrunched up with your lips wobbling as you shook your head. “Our mom would be so proud of you.” You sobbed out, nails digging into his arm for dear life as he lifted your head into his lap.
He could see it. He could see your soul at the edge of your eyes and it was only drifting farther and farther from reach. From reality. You were sinking farther and faster than he could swim or reach. He didn’t know what to do.
Because even with your life slowly fading, you held that broken smile as your bottom lip trembled. Your hand shakily held his cheek as you nodded to yourself. “Mom would be so proud of you, kiddo.” You repeated, eyes flickering shut as JJ’s tears hit your pale face. And soon, your body weighed heavy in his grasp.
JJ leaned down pressing a kiss on your head and brushing strands of your hair out of your face. Holding you against his chest as he sat the entire boat ride silent. Tears streamed down his face as everyone glanced at him worriedly. But he was too preoccupied with the wandering regret of not telling you the same when he had the chance.
The sun was starting to set. You and Jj had stolen the Twinkie. You maybe or maybe not have gotten some weed. But it was fine because the two of you were going on a late night surfing date.
You had been wanting to do this for a while but you had never seen too catch a break with all the gold and stuff. But one day when everyone was just chilling doing nothing the two of you took it upon yourselves to pack a picnic basket( Well it was mostly you because Jj kept trying to eat everything). And head off to an excluded part of the beach.
You drove over the twinkie because Jj said he had “Priorities” and needed to roll the fOrBiDdEn LeTtUcE for later that day. So finally when you two had given up on the beach, right away you took your boards and hit the waves.
The two of you were having the most fun you had had in a while. Just laughing and having a great time in each other's presence. As of the adventures, Ward, Rafe had never happened.
The waves were starting to die down so you and Jj were sitting on the boards talking to each other passing the weed from one another when all of a sudden Jj fell off his board trying to sue you for a cool trick.
You just laughed it off wondering where he was but it had been a minute and he still wasn’t up from the water. Getting frantic he started looking around for Jj panicking. But then all of a sudden two arms come from behind you and wrap around your waist pulling you into the water.
Jj started laughing as you hit him on the shoulder. He was still laughing as you were telling how it wasn’t funny and you thought he had died.In the middle of your ranting on and on he kissed you.
It wasn’t a quick kiss. It was passionate, you felt like it had been hours since you grabbed his hair to pull him closer. He finally pulled back, admiring you and asked happy?
What started as a stupid TikTok trend, a blind pregnancy test challenge with your friends Kiara and Sarah, was just meant to be a joke. Clearly, it’s useless. But you were just teenagers, wanting to mess around. Until Sarah picked up the test marked "positive," the moment everything changed.
And deep down, you knew. You were the one. Oh you were so fucked.
How did you know it was you ? Probably considering the fact your periods were late and not only of two days. Even the bloating had been a clue. To be honest, there were a lot of signs you ignored, simply because you didn’t want to admit it. But now that game set it all, you were pregnant at barely 18.
Fear sank in fast, curling around your ribs like barbed wire. Being pregnant was one thing. Telling your boyfriend was another. Something you never doubted, though, was how much JJ loved you, everyone could see it just by the way he looked at you. He wouldn’t be mad. Shocked, sure. Scared, probably. Insecure about being a dad, absolutely. But no matter what, he would be there for you and that kid. So when JJ was alone, just working on his bike, you took the chance.
You watched him, heart thudding in your chest like it might give you away before your words could. He looked so at peace, focused on his bike, grease on his fingers. The boy immediately noticed you, just like always. A smile found his face, eyes looking at your body, not even trying to be discreet. He had no reason to be after all, you were his and he already saw you all. “Hey sweetheart.”
That usual nickname caused you to smile before you hesitantly took his dirty hand. Your thumb traced the small scar on his finger, caused by one of his multiple father’s breakdowns, a reminder of a past neither of you liked to talk about. A loud sigh left your mouth before you let it out, because what was the point of trying to hide it ? Sure, you could have announced it another way, but you didn’t want to. “I’m pregnant.’’
Almost immediately, his smirk faded, being replaced with something hard to translate. There was shock, fear, and obviously, surprise. Just like you, he never expected that to happen. But now it was real. He looked at you, scanning your face as if to make sure you were honest. “As in, with a baby ?”
“Yes,” you said. “With what else ?”
You thought he would stay there, staring at you with those beautiful blue eyes until he was certain it wasn’t some dream - or perhaps nightmare - he was part of. But he did the whole opposite. Your boyfriend stood up from his bike, squeezed your hand before pulling you in for a hug. It was warm, full of all the things he didn’t know how to say yet: fear, doubt, uncertainty. But most importantly, love.
It wasn’t just a teen pregnancy, it was his girlfriend, the love of his life, carrying his future baby.
“You’re so freaking amazing.” His hands found your belly, the slight bump showing. “It was under our eyes for so long..That’s my kid in there.”
Then, like the absolute goof he was, he knelt down and pressed his head against your belly, whispering dumb jokes and wild stories about him and the Pogues. A soft smile formed on your face. You knew it was just a facade to stop his hands from shaking, to take your stress out even for just a minute and see your smile, but it also was the confirmation you needed to know everything would be okay.
Because as long as you had him, the future didn’t seem so scary. You weren’t alone
