Your nails kept running down the fingers on your left hand and when it came to your ring finger, the lack of metal wrapped around it just added to the reality of what was going on in front of you.
“Alright, I just need you to sign the bottom line there...” Your lawyer put an X next to one of the lines at the bottom of the page and slid it across the desk. You glanced over, seeing Ryan grab it and pull it the rest of the way, lining his pen up with the said line and signing his name.
“And, Y/N, I’ll have you sign the line right above Ryan’s.” Once Ryan finished his name, he pushed the paper towards you, his face full of regret, though you didn’t look higher than his hand to notice. You stared at the paper for a moment, looking between the line where you needed to sign and Ryan’s flawless signature, and then you forced your hand to move, letting it glide across the paper.
“Perfect.” The lawyer took the paper back, both of your signatures confirming that this was it. “That should be it. You guys have any other questions for me?” You shook your head, but heard Ryan next to you quietly answer the man.
“No.”
“Great. Well....I’m sorry about all this, but...it’s done now, so...” The man stood and reached his hand out, so you mirrored him, shaking his hand back. “It was nice meeting you guys.” You nodded, forcing the best smile you could and then you waited as he shook Ryan’s hand as well.
“Take care of yourselves, alright?”
“You too.” Ryan said back while you were already heading for the door.
You and Ryan walked together down the halls of the court house in silence. You could even feel him look over at you a few times, but couldn’t pull yourself to look back. You could barely look at him this entire time and you knew it had to be bothering him, but you just couldn’t do it. You felt like you were seconds away from breaking down, so you just wanted to get this done and over with and out of there. Get back to Dean, to Sam and Jess. Back to where you’ve been happy.
The long walk out to the parking lot was finally coming to an end and you had your keys out, the doors already being unlocked by the time you got to the drivers door.
“Hey, Y/N?” Your hand was on the handle. You were that close to getting out of there without having to look at him. Why did he have to say something?
Taking a long breath in, you finally forced yourself to turn and look up. He was standing at his drivers door for he parked right next to you, looking over the roof of his car at you, sorrow filling all his features.
“I know that it won’t make a difference, but for what it’s worth........I’m really sorry. I never wanted to hurt you, I just.....” he swallowed back some tears as you continued to fight yours. “I fucked up. Bad, and I’m.....I’m so sorry.” You looked away, finally letting out the air you were holding in.
“Again, I know that it won’t make a difference. I just....I wanted you to know.” Looking back over at your now ex husband, you tried so hard to give him at least a small smile, but you’re sure it was far from good enough. Then you climbed in your car, started her up and pulled out of the parking lot. One glance in your rear view showed that he was still standing there, watching as you drove away.
“Hey.” Dean ran the towel through his hair as he greeted his brother and Jess. “Where’d you guys go?”
“Just to run a few errands.” Sam stated as he set his keys by the door. “How was work?”
“Messy.” Pulling the towel away from his head, Dean draped it over his shoulder. “I was changing someones oil and couldn’t get a valve loose. Finally got it, but had oil spray out from the sides and completely cover me.”
“Hence the shower.” Jess smiled, pointed at the freshly clean Dean Winchester.
“Exactly. But uh....where’s Y/N?”
“She had her appointment with the lawyer this morning.” Sam said as he looked down at his watch.
“Yeah, but that shouldn’t have taken too long. I mean, with Lisa and me, we were in and out within an hour.” The couple only shrugged, admitting they had no idea where you have been for the last five hours. So Dean nodded and pulled the towel from his shoulder before jogging upstairs to put a shirt on.
Dean drove around for over an hour, going to all the places he thought you could be after seeing that your car was no longer at the courthouse. Not that he thought you would be there, but he checked just to be sure.
One more place came to mind and he was praying with everything he had in him that you would be there, cause if you weren’t, he was out of options. He would just have to wait until you decided to answer your phone or just come home, and he didn’t know how well he’d deal with that.
Pulling in the parking lot, Dean smiled when he saw the lake shimmer in the late afternoon sun. Ever since you both moved in with Sam and Jess, this was the place that the two of you would go to get some fresh air and to give Sam and Jessica some alone time. That and the four of you would come and jog around the lake every once in awhile. It was perfect. A very peaceful place.
Stepping out of the car, Dean let his eyes run over all the people running around. Some were walking, some were jogging and some were sitting by the shore and sticking their feet in the water. But none of them looked like you.
Sighing heavily, he dropped his shoulders in defeat, trying to come up with a plan B. Or would it be plan F at this point?
Figuring he would think of something as he headed back home, Dean pulled open the drivers door and began to slide in when he heard a dog barking. He glanced that way, smiling at the little family that was playing by the water, but right before he could let his butt hit the seat, he caught a woman sitting by herself on a bench that was hidden by a small group only seconds ago.
There you were. Sitting like a statue, looking over the lake and not paying any attention to anyone else around you.
Pulling himself back out of the car, he locked it up and then slowly made his way over to you. By the time he came along side the bench, he could see that your cheeks had a pink tint, and it wasn’t from makeup. You never were one to wear blush or even put on an extravagant amount of makeup at all.
No. That was from crying. Even without the dried tear tracks he could see that. Only because he knew you so well.
With him, this entire process was a little easier to deal with than it was for you. Did he miss Lisa? Yeah, of course. He did love her. But with what happened, it was easier for him to let her go. For you, he knew this was so much harder. He knew you didn’t want Ryan back, but to sign away a life you just spent the last six plus years building up? It wasn’t easy.
“Hey.” You quickly snapped your head, looking up at him and took what looked like the first breath you had in a few hours.
He wanted to say so much to you. ‘I’m sorry’ ‘If you want to talk, I’m here’ ‘If you want to hit me, that’s okay too’ But instead he opted for just sliding in next to you, his hand coming to rest on your thigh.
You sniffled a couple times and he could tell that him being there was making you emotional again, but he just wanted to be there for you. So that’s what he did. He sat there, quiet, and was just there for you for whatever you needed him for. The people around you were just white noise as you both stared off at the lake.
Eventually, you scooted closer to him and he wrapped his arm around you, pulling you into his side as you rested you head against his shoulder, and that’s where you both sat for a while. According to the sun, a long while.
Dean waited until the sun was about to dip down under the horizon before pulling away and looking down at you. You looked exhausted.
“You ready to go home?” With a sleepy nod, he stood and helped you up with him. Keeping his arm around your waist, he walked you over to his car and helped you in the passenger seat, watching as your head rested against the window after he shut the door. Thankfully, you both weren’t far from the house, so he was hoping to get you there before you fell asleep.
“How she doing?” Sam asked from the couch, Jessica sitting right next to him, both of them watching Dean come down the stairs.
“She’s asleep.” Jess smiled softly as Dean came over and took a seat in the arm chair near them.
“And how are you doing?” Dean rolled his head against the back of the chair, seeing that the couple was still staring him down, his brother clearly worried about him.
“I’m good.” Sam’s brow raised, making him chuckle. “I’m serious, Sam. I’m fine. The process was a little difficult, but...if anything, I’m relieved. Y/N definitely took this a little harder, that’s all.”
“Yeah, well, thankfully it’s over now, right?” Jess sighed, curling more into Sam’s side.
“Yep. And I have to thank you both again for taking us in for the last...eight, however months. You guys have definitely made it easier on us.”
“Of course.” They both replied at the same time, a small smirk growing on both of them for the fact that they were in sync. Sam wrapped his arm around Jess’ waist, pulling her even closer and placing a kiss to the top of her head before looking back to his brother.
“You know that we’re here to help you guys any time. Cause we all know that you’d do the same for us.” Dean smiled contently, feeling his body getting heavier with sleep the longer he sat there.
“So what now?” Sam asked after a long, comfortable silence, and Dean sighed heavily, shifting in his seat as he tried to stay awake a little longer.
“I don’t know. I guess we just....pick ourselves back up and start looking for a place to live.”
“Together?” Jess asked, getting both men to look from her to one another, Dean then swallowing hard.
“I’m not sure.”
The first few days after the finalizing of yours and Ryan’s divorce, you were quiet. Kept to yourself mostly and stayed in the room you and Dean were using. The three of them made sure to give you your space, Dean being the only one to come and bug you about eating and to check up on you.
But then you finally broke out of it. It may have still been on your mind, but you started joining the three of them more. Having breakfast and dinner with them, and even lunch if you were all home together.
You and Dean seemed to have just fallen into your relationship like it was nothing. It just seemed to carry over from your week away from your cheating spouses.
Having known each other practically your entire lives had to have helped the fact, but you would think that just having been married and then divorced within the year that being together wouldn’t feel right.
But it did.
Neither of you were in a hurry to rush into anything though, and you both agreed that what you had was perfect for the moment. You were a couple, that was for certain. But to move forward, that was nowhere on your to do list, and you were both okay with that.
Even though you both trusted each other to never put the other through what you’ve been through, again, after everything that happened with Lisa and Ryan, the thought of marriage was nowhere on your radar.
So you both remained content and happy with how your lives were for the time being. You were together, you were happy and life felt like it couldn’t get any better.
But just like the infidelity with your spouses and how it seemed to have pushed you both together, the universe seemed to have another set of it’s own plans for you both once again...
“I love the high ceilings.” You looked up as Dean continued to move through the house, seeing how the vaulted ceilings were definitely a nice touch to such a beautiful home. “The kitchen is all you, sweetheart!”
Hearing him call from the other room, you and the realtor continued through the living room to join him in the kitchen.
The counter space, the cabinets, the color. It was all so gorgeous, and just like Dean said, all you. It definitely was. That was your dream kitchen.
“I could see you cooking up a storm in here.” You giggled quietly to yourself, running your fingers over the granite counter tops as you moved closer to him. “Make some delicious pies in this oven too.” he added as he pulled open the oven door.
“Only if you’re good.” Dean laughed, the realtor joining in as she watched you both admire the place, and after a few minutes of you both looking over the heart of the home, she glanced towards you, her smile growing.
“When are you due?” You and Dean both looked over to her and then your eyes dropped with your hand, your fingers dancing along your baby bump.
“Three months.”
“Oh! Close.” She cheered, glancing in Dean’s direction, seeing his smile glowing as he watched you. “Well, would you like to see the backyard? There’s so much space for that little one to run around.”
“Yeah, lets do it.” Dean agreed, coming to your side and resting his hand on your lower back. “Maybe we’ll get a pool.”
“There’s definitely room for one.” She said as she led you both to the back of the house, Dean smiling down at you as you kept walking.
“Awesome.”
