I wish I was a less judgmental fanfic reader, but I'm not
It drives me absolutely bonkers when I see a fic from Lassiter's perspective that refers to him as Lassie. He hates that name, especially in the beginning, and though it wears him down and he eventually recognizes it as a term of endearment, he would NEVER use it in reference to himself. Yet time and time again I see it on AO3, the author completely unaware they are pulling me out of the story, unable to suspend my disbelief even a little bit. It's the same when they have Shawn refer to himself as Spencer; he associates that name with his father and though they build their relationship throughout the course of the series, being referred to as such still rankles him. He is more than his father and what his father made him. He's not Spencer, he's Shawn.

Why is this so hard for people to understand?
*This PSA is brought to you by the coalition of people opposed to out of character naming ie)those aware that Juliet will always be O'Hara to Lassiter and Gus will always be Guster.
