So I started reading this series because literally everyone I follow on Goodreads loves these books, and the reviews rave about how disturbing and twisted it is!
Disturbing and twisted, that sounds like my kind of book!
Unwind is set after the Second Civil War, which was fought over reproductive rights such as abortion and adoption. What resulted was the Unwinding Accord, a law which allows any child from the age of 13 - 18 to have every single part of their mind and body harvested and transplanted into different people, if the child is determined 'difficult'.
The main characters throughout the series, Connor, Risa, and Lev, are on the run and slowly grow famous from their lack of capture and the means they are willing to go to remain whole.
Ok, so the book was disturbing in parts, and the description of unwinding gave me nightmares, however i just didn't buy it.
The whole idea behind the series, that parents would have their children Unwound if they were disobedient, only after one generation of the law being intact, is not believable, and due to this I just couldn't get into it.
Now, not all books I love are believable, but this one was a little too far fetched, with these children begging for mercy, and understanding, as we do, how fucked up Unwinding is, yet the parents, and other adults, have their heads in the sand and encourage it? Yeah right.
Due to this hesitancy, I also didn't give two shits about the characters. It may be because the POV changed every few pages, and after the first book even more POV's are introduced. I usually really enjoy multiple POV's, however it just never allowed me to really get involved with who they were when the chapters were sometimes only 1 page long, and I also kept forgetting where they were at!
Not everything I have to say is negative though, the book is so well written, probably the best YA writing I've ever read, and as the first book came out before the current over flow of YA books we currently have, it really sets a higher standard. Also no love triangle (not really anyway)!
It was an enjoyable read, and quite interestingly disturbing, however if I don't care who lives, dies, or bangs, I'm just not gonna care about the book!
