HELP GOON DISCUSSION 😭😭 I ACTUALLY LAUGHED SO HARD AT THIS OMG but literature is my freaking passion so ill lock in super hard now and give you my personal favs! for context im big into psychologically tense books, historical books (particularly the victorian era) and also for nonfiction i love feminist manifestos so ill give a nice little mix of each!!
1. women living deliciously by florence given: this is a series of the most eye opening essays you'll ever read! florence is genuinely my icon and writes so beautifully and so powerfully
2. yellowface by rebecca f kuang: super insightful novel about racism and cultural appropriation within the writing industry, SUCH a good read!
3. the household by stacey halls: a victorian era novel that follows the lives of "fallen women", also super psychologically tense and really gripping, if you love this one then you'll love the one below!
4. the doll factory by elizabeth macneal: probably the book that sparked my obsession with victorian psychological thrillers! lowkey traumatising in certain aspects but so riveting! always loved learning about the lives of artists so this is fascinating and one of my all time favourites.
5. baby love by jacqueline wilson: i honestly love all of her books and have since i was a kid, they always cover such unique scenarios and storylines. this one is set in the 60s following a teen mother and i found really interesting!
6. soldier sailor by claire kilroy: this book explores the experiences of postnatal depression and the connection between a mother and son, honestly such an interesting and poetic insight into it that i never would've typically gone for but ended up loving! explores a lot of topics to do with female rage and hormonally induced anger and depression, which as a girl with pmdd i really related to and resonated with.
7. some girls do by jennifer dugan: first sapphic novel on the list, let's go girls! im not typically a fan of this genre of young adult romance but i found this really beautifully written and honestly adored the storyline, definitely a much easier read if you're just starting off.
8. not a book suggestion, but try to consume other forms of media too! personally, i really love frankie magazine, which is an australian magazine that spotlights small businesses, artists and musicians and writes some really fascinating articles about social issues and culture. they also have a website where you can read most of their articles too, definitely check them out!!
