[Reading method] SQ3R
I just starting University and I have to deal with a tons of reading...
And so far I've tried a lot of methods such as, highlighting, writing a summary, taking some notes. When I do all of those things, it takes me hours and hours to just read one subject... my mind isn’t organized thus I can’t remember well what I read later.
Because when I highlighting I tend to read slowly and highlighting almost everything that seems important to me... and the worst is to go back what I read therefore my reading flow is broke and my comprehension too...
The most important thing at reading is to read fast ! So, your mind will not be distracted and focus on what you're reading.
And I found a reading method, it's called SQ3R. There are 5 steps :
1/ Survey.
Explore your reading, scan the title, introduction, images, maps... and also look at typographical elements of the text, such as italics, bold words, subheadings, and boxed text. These often point to words or ideas that are important.
2/ Question.
Use these clues to note down any questions that you thought of during your survey or that you may have about the subject. These could be the questions that led you to read it in the first place.
3/ Read.
While you're reading use Mind maps or Cornell note taking, to take notes on important concepts (when you finshed with one paragraph/section.) Plus if the book/paper is yours, you can "read actively" by underlining important passages or by using a highlighter pen to show key points.
4/ Recall.
Then try to answer to your questions from step 2 from memory. Only turn back to the text (or notes) if you're unable to answer a question.
5/ Review.
When you're able to recall the information, you can start to review it. Schedule regular reviews of the material to keep it fresh in your mind. Do this after a week, after a month, and after several months – this helps to embed the material into your long-term memory.
Now, you (and I) have to turn this reading technique into a habit.
