Health & wellbeing – proven power of reading

An online poll of over four thousand people from a representative sample in the UK revealed that regular readers for pleasure reported fewer feelings of stress & depression than non-readers, and stronger feelings of relaxation from reading than from watching television or engaging in technology-intensive activities.

Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns.

 Adults who read for just 30 minutes a week are 20% more likely to report greater life satisfaction.

My Major Project

Reading App

Finally, I’ve made a decision & I’ve decided on my major project idea. I’m going to create a reading app prototype.

The reasoning behind choosing this idea is simply due to the fact that I’m the most passionate about it & I think (along with several others) that it’s really needed on the market right now.

In summary, I want users to:

Track their reading habits

Leave reviews

Have their own public & private profile

Connect with friends and authors

Participate in reading challenges

Receive points/ awards for their reading progress

Display their scores on a leadership board

Prompt users with reminders to read daily

Gather statistics about how the user reads e.g. time spent on each page, the average length of time to finish 1 book.

I’m excited to continue my research in this area and to gather some facts and figures over whether reading really is on the decline in recent years or not.

Research

Through my own passion and hobby of reading, I’ve found that there isn’t really a popular app on the market which is great to use in order to track your current reading habits, progress, review books and connect with friends and authors you admire.

Goodreads and bookly are the only 2 I’ve came across. A lot of people use Goodreads (as it’s owned by Amazon) so you’re really prompted into immediately signing up for it once you purchase a kindle.

Main Motivation for this idea

I want to create an app with a beautiful UX which really encourages users to make reading a daily habit, allows them to track their reading progress, connect with friends, compete in reading challenges and follow authors they love. I also want users to be able to gather statistics about their reading habits, so to allow them to view their own personal statistics, reading times, how long on average it takes them to finish a book of 400 - 500 pages etc.
