I had been looking for a #chess partner for long. And when our 11yo #columnist Nitya (in photo) wrote her story for this week’s #edition of our #children’s #weekly @theshepherdofreadersburg she wrote about a royal chess match and mentioned rooks and pawns like a pro in the story. The moment I read the story, I knew I’d finally found a chess partner! So we had been meeting for the past 3 #mornings over a #game of chess. Today was the grand finale. I lost 🙋🏻‍♀️👧🏻😑...and I’ve never felt more like a winner ...ever! I took this photo immediately after my King was sent for a walk in the park 😎 ...our past three mornings were neatly divided between chess and #reading. One of the best westward expansion picture books about the transcontinental railroad I've ever seen. Locomotive is detail rich in the descriptive text and beautiful illustrations. Dog rescues Magpie after she injured her wing and together they live a peaceful and harmonious life. That is until one day the sneaky Fox arrives. Envious of their friendship, Fox convinces Magpie to go for a ride on his back, assuring her it will remind her of being able to fly. Poor Magpie eventually gets persuaded. My colleagues recommended this book for helping students develop big ideas about multiple characters at once and tracking those ideas across the text. It was a huge hit with my fourth graders, they had so much to say about these characters and they supported their ideas with strong text evidence! #fox #margaretwild #ronbrooks #whatsonmyshelf #readingworkshop #writingaboutreading
