Here is a drawing I made back in April while living in the guest cabin on some friends’ land on Sinixt territory (interior ‘BC’)
The phrases in it were jotted down as I drew while listening to the ReadTheTRCReport project (initiated by Erica Violet Lee, Zoe Todd, and Joseph Paul Murdoch-Flowers), a collection of videos people reading the entirety of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Report on Residential Schools in sections. If you don’t know the project, it can be found as a playlist on youtube, or downloaded in audio or video form here. Since the videos are a variety of emotional readings and sonic atmospheres, grounding the text in the materialities of people with varying relationships to it, I found it to be an effective way to internalize + appreciate the content of the report.
While the language of reconciliation has been extensively lip-serviced by the colonial government only 5 of the report’s 94 calls to action have been met, 500+ days after its release and Trudeau’s promise to implement them. (https://twitter.com/Ian_Mosby/status/791319841240035328)
