Hi, I hope you're well! I was hoping you'd tell me if there will ever be a continuation of the first read to roll installment? It is a very fun and amazing idea btw <3
Honestly the plan for the next installment will be a literal story that the character created from the first installment will be a part of and requires waaaaay more time than I currently have. I do WANT to come back to this sooner rather than later but I just do not know when I'll be able to 😔
last august, bibliophilicwitch and relevy ran a challenge called Read to Roll that i thought was pretty fun! I decided that I wanted to do the challenge again, just for lulz. there’s no time restraints, just whenever I finish the books. look for me participating in any other dnd-themed reading challenges they do in the future, too! a description of my dnd character (shitty sims rendition of them included) along with the books I’ll be reading are under the cut, but go to those links for full details of the challenge!
here’s mal! their skin is a bit more gray, but sims doesn’t have very good grey skin tones. They’re a half-drow shadow sorcerer with a charlatan background. They wear a cloak and when they’re not casting spells they use a dagger! They were raised primarily by their drow mom after their human father was killed in retribution for their mom leaving her drow house, and they spent a lot of time on the run before their mom was inevitably killed as well. they’re a compulsive liar and kind of walk around with a cloud over their head, which is a fun dynamic when they’re running around with the chaotic-good-aligned bard and druid in their party or retiring for the night with the family that has more or less adopted them, the Abra family (on whom the Addams family is based).
here’s the books I’ll be reading!:
RACE: half-drow - book with a black cover
The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson
CLASS: sorcerer - something magical on the cover
Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore
those are actually swans on the cover! (took me a while to figure it out lol)
BACKGROUND: charlatan - a book about criminals
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
WEAPONS: dagger - a book featuring assassins/rogues
Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller
ACCESSORIES: cloak - soft cover
Solibo Magnificent by Patrick Chamoiseau
Be on the lookout for my thoughts on all of these! I can’t wait to read them :)
Just finished Six of Crows by Leigh Barduro this morning. It was a fun read and I really liked most of the Characters (especially Jesper). Can’t wait to read the second part!
But for now onwards towards Das Labyrinth des Fauns by Cornelia Funke and Guillermo del Toro. I‘m quite excited for this one because of the interesting combination of authors... I don’t know if she is well known in other countries, but here in Germany Cornelia Funke is a very famous children’s books/YA author.
While late to posting, I am joining (oddly, without anything in the fantasy genre this session—but look at those stunning covers). My character is an Elven, Druidic Acolyte with her road-worn cloak and trusty staff in hand.
Race: Elf — Book over 400 pages (The Unhoneymooners)
Class: Druid — Greenery on the cover (Wilder Girls)
Accessories: Cloak — Soft cover (The Unhoneymooners)
Background: Acolyte — Book featuring themes of grey morals (Wilder Girls)
Weapons: Staff — A book featuring a traveler (This is How You Lose the Time War)
This month I’m participating in Read to Roll, a DnD inspired read-a-thon! I’ve never actually played DnD, but this seemed like a really fun event and I’m super excited. So here is my TBR to build my character:
Race: Elf
Book over 400 pages - The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco
Class: Rogue
Mysterious character on the cover - The Shadowglass by Rin Chupeco
Background: Alcolyte
A book featuring grey morals - The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Weapons: Rapier
A book featuring a chosen one - Sabriel by Garth Nix
Accessories: Cloak
Soft cover - Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
Now I just need to think of a name for my character. Because obviously I’m not going through this without giving her a name. Can’t wait to get started and see what everyone else does!
Race: Halfling (A book you can read in a day) Murder on the Rockport Limited by The McElroy Family illustrated by Carey Pietsch. I've been waiting months for this follow up and I just need to sit down and read it!
Class: Druid (Greenery on the cover) Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff. This is actually a reread but I'm working on my own Arthurian retelling and I really want to go back to this book because it's what inspired this whole journey.
Background: Noble (A book about political intrigue) The Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen. Gotta finish up the series! I'm terrified!
Weapons: Staff (A book featuring a traveler) An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. This hasn't been on my TBR very long but it's so far out of my normal genres I'm excited to read it.
Accessories: Chainmail (Cover with shiny accents) Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I love collecting mythology retellings and then never reading them. Whoops.
TL;DR - Non-binary Halfling Noble who loves nature and will fight you for killing that spider instead of escorting it outside. Looking for adventure outside of their comfort zone!
Well that certainly was a quick one! I've been meaning to reread The Slow Regard of Silent Things and this readathon gave me the perfect opportunity. Auri is probably one of the most mysterious people in this series!
I heavily recommend the Kingkiller Chronicle to everyone I meet. It completely changed my understanding of stories and how they are told. There's definitely a cinematic quality to these books and its lends itself so easily to imagination.
This novella though? It breaks so many rules of storytelling, but in such an amazing way. Even the author warns in the introduction that this story would be a bit difficult to comprehend. But, to me, I saw so much of myself in this book. Hell, it even made me care about the well-being of a gear!
If you're still on the fence or unaware of these books, check them out if you have the chance!
(Also, a little Hogwarts House plug because my character, Rubio, is a MAJOR Slytherin. Ambitious little goat man, he is.)
